How Persona Q is Making a Forgotten Genre Cool Again

When you think of role-playing games, you might tend to think of fussy, complex, slow-paced games full of dungeons, dice, and dragons fun for some, but generally too old-fashioned to seem cool. Ten years ago though, a Japanese publisher turned that axiom on its ear with Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3, which married classic dungeon exploration with the day-to-day life of cool Japanese teenagers.
While Persona 3 didn't shy away from the traditional difficulty level of the notoriously brutal Shin Megami Tensei franchise that inspired it, the addition of teenage drama to the gameplay changed its focus from pure combat to something almost like a dating sim or other adventure game.
