Over and above that we're very rarely in the present; we're more often than not in the past or the future. Together these phenomena make for a healthy dose of hype and expectation. It's true that hype is rarely ever self-starting. There is invariably an external stimulus that triggers it but from there it is self-perpetuated and can only be terminated with critical thinking or engaging in the source of the hype to determine its validity. In the event of that there are three outcomes - expectations exceeded, met, or not met - and the more hype you generate the less likely the former becomes and the more likely the latter becomes."
