Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea Review [Capsule Computers]

Travis Bruno of Capsule Computers writes:
"Ever since the first Atelier title from Gust was released in the West back in 2005, every year has seen the release of a new title in the series. Over the course of this time weve seen various trilogies end and numerous ideas be attempted only to be replaced or refined in subsequent releases. Now with Atelier Escha Logy introducing a two lead-character system, Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea takes the same route with a number of new additions, including the removal of a notable system that defined the series. Are these changes for the best in what appears to be the final game in the Dusk trilogy?"

Technology Tell writes, "The Dusk Sea is expanding, and it threatens to swallow the remaining human settlements. Atelier Shallie opens with Shallistera, a young, budding alchemist, on a diplomatic voyage to seek aid for her hometown, before separately introducing Shallotte, also a young alchemist-in-training in search of her own purpose. Youre then given the choice which Shallie is your avatar to start the adventure."

NZGamer:
It is a shame that more people will not play this game.
From the basic and time-honoured premise of oh dear, the water is drying up! We had better go on some quests. Oh god, here comes a monster aaaaaand we saved the world comes Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea, a game that is a little bit cliche at times, but is mechanically excellent and ticks almost every single box for the loot-loving, item-mixing RPG enthusiast.

RPGFan:
I've grown so accustomed to playing and reviewing Atelier games that beginning each new title is akin to settling back into a groove. Throughout my alchemic escapades, I've gotten to know bumbling Rorona, timid Totori, spunky Meruru, gentle Ayesha, earnest Escha, responsible Logy, and now, two girls who share the name "Shallie." No matter what changes manifest on the surface, every Atelier game is a story of characters growing, learning about the world, and fulfilling their dreams. Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea is ostensibly the best game in its trilogy on many fronts character design, combat, music, you name it its sole failing being a tendency to overextend in its efforts to eliminate player stress.

Denis Murphy writes- I love digging into a really good RPG. Back in the day my first venture into the genre came about with the release of the original Playstation. You see, I grew up with a Mega Drive as my main go-to console in our house. Sure, there were RPGs for the Mega Drive, but nothing on the level of Final Fantasy or Zelda. Nope, I just had a heap of platforming games and garish looking first-person shooters to play with sadly.

gamrReview's Karl Koebke: "This was a fairly harsh write-up, but I dont want readers to think that I didnt enjoy my time with Atelier Shallie, rather I just didnt enjoy it as much as previous iterations. However, if youre new to the series and have been wanting to check it out this might be a good time to jump on board. It lacks challenge as an RPG, but its one of the few games in the genre that focuses on more personal storylines, which can be incredibly endearing. As a new player, if you enjoy Atelier Shallie and think you can muster the courage to play with a deadline then I highly recommend Atelier Totori, which I still consider the pinnacle of the series. Fans of the series, on the other hand, have almost certainly already bought the game and so have their own opinions on where it ranks in the series as a whole."
