ZTGD | Aaru's Awakening Review

Drew Leachman writes: I enjoy a good platformer. Seeing my character coordinate a series of jumps and actions, all the while trying to avoid hazards and enemies is both exhilarating and fun when its executed correctly. Games like Super Meat Boy and Dustforce are some of those games that handle quick thinking combos and acrobatic moves well. Aarus Awakening, unfortunately, does not.

Despite some good ideas and a cool art style, Aaru falls short of being a dream platformer.

PCGamer:
Aaru's Awakening is a 2D action puzzle-platformer made by Lumenox Games. It features beautiful, hand-drawn environments and animation, and a wonderful, soothing soundtrack. So why did I hold up two middle fingers at it for several long, angry seconds? We'll get to that in a minute.
I'll spare you the lore: let's just say Aaru is a yellow monster you guide through four gorgeous yet dangerous realms filled with spiked walls, falling platforms, toxic pits, enemy monsters, and tons of other traps and hazards, including several boss fights that often contain many of these deadly elements at the same time. Besides running and jumping, Aaru can perform a charge, a flying headbutt useful for bashing through crumbling stone walls and getting a few extra feet out of a jump that's fallen short.

Aarus Awakening started life as a simple class project for three of the guys involved in its development. They created a basic prototype that was entered in to a competition in Reykjavik and, as luck would have it, they won! This gave the team enough funding to create a full version of their concept and start their own games company, Lumenox.

Traditional hand-drawn animation feels like a lost art, but Aaru's Awakening is an incredible reminder of the magic inherent to this antique craft. Modeled after 70s comics and animated films, every vista and enemy in Aarus Awakening was painstakingly drawn with pencils on paper before it was scanned into a computer in many cases the original pencil lines are still visible. The game is awash with vibrant visuals that lend an art-house vibe, but the unconventional platforming mechanics need a little more time on the drawing board.

Chalgyr's Game Room writes:
I have been more than a little excited about this one. It has been a while since I played a solid strategy-RPG title (I was not all that fond of Natural Doctrine, despite the hopes I had been harboring for it). In fact, the last awesome handheld strategy game I played was Fire Emblem Awakening - which was amazing. While Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart does not quite reach those lofty standards, it is still an excellent strategy title that should appeal to fans of the Hyper series.

TwoDashStash: "The story, presented as the struggle between rival deities Dawn, Day, Dusk and Night is narrated from a third person omniscient perspective and is completely disconnected from the actual game itself. You are told for example that you have doubts and that your resolve is failing from visiting injustice upon your masters rivals but absolutely nothing in the game itself conveys any of this. "

Gamespot:
Some say that there is no such thing as love at first sight--that initial attraction and infatuation appeal only to our aesthetic pleasures, and that true love only rises when passion no longer clouds our judgment. Romantics and idealists may dismiss the notion, but the deep-rooted frustrations of Aaru's Awakening may drive them to reconsider their sentiment. This unusual game craves your affection, each of its radiant hand-drawn environments singing love songs until you're entranced. You may initially fall for this superficial beauty, but the game soon reveals its true form as a vindictive suitor, grossly untrustworthy in its controls and devoid of the fundamental assets of any good platformer. I am sorry, Aaru's Awakening, but I must cut this relationship short, and I am afraid it's not me: it's you.
