Review: Onechanbara Z2: Chaos (DarkZero)

Dominic Sheard: "Hey! Hang on a minute! Don't just turn away after clicking the title. You clicked it, so you might as well stay around and see what I have to say on Onechanbara Z2: Chaos, the latest in a series of video games that involves a main female character dressed in a bikini. You would think she is ready to hit the beach and get a tan, but that is not the case with the Onechanbara series, which pits the bikini lady against hordes of the undead, as she pummels them into showers of blood and gore. This is pure B-movie entertainment, stuff that will probably entertain anyone who enjoyed the likes of Tokyo Gore Police, The Machine Girl and Versus those crazy over the top bloodbath action films that have a crap plot, but somehow manage to bring some fun to the viewing. Onechanbara Z2: Chaos is a similar experience, and while the Wii game, Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers, was a poor game with monotonous action, Onechanbara Z2: Chaos brings some actual worthwhile improvements...

USGamer:
There's the occasional game on the showfloor that exists mainly to destroy the egos of gamers who dare to pick up the controller. I've seen a few titles in that vein at this PAX, with Chasm leading the pack. While I was waiting for my appointment, I saw four players ram their heads against the alpha build's midboss. Not a one succeeded.

From the review: "Onechanbara Z2: Chaos never really forgets where it came from. As a result, it's mired in some pretty simplisitic gameplay and storytelling. If you're a fan of the series, then it's worth checking out. Otherwise, you're better served by games like Devil May Cry."

Metro:
Samurai girls in bikinis versus a horde of the undead might sound like a classic B-movie set-up, but can this game make the most of it?
The first, and until now only, time we played a Onechanbara game it came with the subtitle of Bikini Samurai Squad, which gives a good hint as to how far the series is trying to push the boundaries of video games as an art form. Its real goal though was trying to trick people who like bikinis, samurai, and zombies (oddly missing from that original subtitle) into thinking this is the game for them. This sequel has gone for the rather less evocative subtitle of Chaos, presumably because Disaster wouldnt sound quite so appealing.

Curses' N Chaos is a tribute 2D beat'n'up to 16-bit classics, the real golden age of the genre. The mechanics are very similar to those of the period of the Super Nintendo, as well as the graphics and the music. This is its strength but can also be its weakness.

Andi Otakugamers.UK "Onechanbara, for those not familiar with the series can be summed up with it's Wii release title "Bikini Zombie Slayers". It's B Movie in game form, possessing a cult status with it's fans the series has seen a somewhat spotty release in it's history. Fortunately XSEED NIS have brought over the latest in the series Onechanbara ZII Chaos. The name is just a little random but perfectly suited for the nature of this series."

"The Onechanbara series has quite a lot in common with exploitation B-movies. There is excessive monster-based action and violence, and an element of sexiness that runs underneath, with two of the main characters in Onechanbara Z2 Chaos defaulting to skimpy bathing suit outfits. But does it feel like a B-game or something more? Id argue the latter." - Rice Digital

WGTC:
To be entirely honest, I wasnt the biggest fan of Tribute Games previous effort, Mercenary Kings. As a fan of the franchise, the Metal Slug aesthetic appealed to me, but the sluggish action and myriad of technical issues turned me off of the title. I appreciated the old-school feel the studio was going for, though, which was partly why I was interested in their latest release, Curses N Chaos. Like their last outing, it draws upon gamings past in order to create a new, but familiar experience.

| Square Enix giving away actual island in Just Cause 3 competition

Square Enix is giving away an actual, real-life island to the winner of a newly announced Just Cause 3 competition. To receive the special code required to participate in this contest, you must pre-order the game.
The contest will be an exercise in destruction, with participants racing to score the most Chaos Points by unleashing Rico Rodriguezs collection of guns, bombs, vehicles and his faithful grappling hook to wreak havoc all over the in-game island of Medici, Square Enix said in a press release. The more creative and inventive the mayhem, the more Chaos Points players will earn, with an actual island at stake for the top-scoring winner.

Arena combat games usually pit you against your friends, but Curses 'N Chaos' take on the genre is quite a welcome change. Fighting hordes of monsters while helping each other overcome seemingly impossible odds is a concept that makes for one addictive thrill-ride.
