Is Cities: Skylines the city-builder that youve been waiting for? - Vic B'Stard's State of Play

Added: 15.03.2015 8:18 | 38 views | 0 comments

Vic B'Stard writes: "Paradox Interactive, publishers of the so-so Cities in Motion transport planning simulators have now entered the full-on city-building fray with Cities: Skylines. After years of disappointment, I find out if this is the city builder that we have been waiting for. Now I love a good city builder, going all the way back to the original SimCity on my Amiga. SimCity publisher EA and developer Maxis have been tinkering with their formula for decades giving us some hits in SimCity 4, some misses in SimCity Societies and a bit of a disaster in their 2013 SimCity."

True to their name, everything about Colossal Order's Cities Skylines is absolutely titanic in scale, allowing gamers to create thriving cities many miles across that puts SimCity to shame.

Alex wrote: The franchise so far has been doing poorly, forcing Monte Cristo to close down and even though they had somewhat of a yearly release, it had been 3 years since the last title, Cities XL Platinum; a kind of expansion to Cities XL 2012.

City building games are in relatively high demand at the moment since SimCity came out a couple of years ago. So when the Colossal Order, the makers of Cities in Motion (CIM) and CIM2, said they were making a fully fledged city builder it was deemed a clear challenger to SimCity but many believed they had a colossal task on their hands having only nine staff members at the time. Oh boy didnt they do well.

Chaz from We Got This Covered wrote: Cities XXL is a really difficult game to review. Not because I had a hard time breaking down the details of it or exploring all of its nuances, but simply because I feel like Ive already pretty much reviewed this game. I mean, its been just over three years since I took a look at Cities XL 2012, but it seems like I pretty much covered everything there. I dont mean that as some sort of lazy slight to get out of doing this review, I mean it in the very literal sense that Ive played this game before.

Cities XXL review: A clinical exercise in city management | Examiner

If you like managing spreadsheets, then Cities XXL is a fairly entertaining and deep city-builder for armchair city planners. But its lack of whimsy and charm make it a rather clinical, dry affair more akin to managing a garden than a vibrant city.

A New Idea Could Change The Way Virtual Cities Are Created

Added: 26.02.2015 16:09 | 24 views | 0 comments

A project named OpenHattan is proposing a new idea that could revolutionize the way virtual cities for games and real-time applications are created. Instead of the current method, which relies on hired staff to make the survey, 3D models and textures, a new platform is proposed that would present the recreation of complete real-world cities, as detailed 3D environments, in an open-source manner. The first stage of the project would be to gather funds from all parties, interested in receiving a free-to use, virtual copy of a real city, followed by an on-site survey to collect all the needed data. When launched, the online platform will offer every building for modeling to anyone with the required skills and in return they would receive a monetary reward. After completion the 3D resource will be released to the public at no cost and with no limitations of use. This will present multiple advantages to gamers and game developers.
