Avoiderdragon: When Aliens: Colonial Marines was released, it made for some really tough times for Sega and Gearbox Software, the latter of which wasnt doing too badly anyway since they have their Borderlands franchise to fall back on. As one of the worst games of 2013, it was a game with so much hype and promise that proceeded to crash and burn. What a lot of people didnt know until much later is that there was another Alien game in the works, and it has now been released.

Alien: Isolation is the 18th Alien game (not including all the Alien vs. Predator titles) to make an attempt, with The Creative Assembly in the developer seat this time around. If that name sounds familiar, it may be because you play the Total War series. In any case, this title is sitting in a dangerous area with the recent release of Aliens: Colonial Marines. Road to VR Alien: Isolation is Creative Assemblys stab at moving a beloved movie franchise into a compelling interactive experience. Early word on the title was that, unlike the execrable Aliens: Colonial Marines before it, Isolation was something special. Whats more, at GDC earlier this year, Oculus proudly showed the triple-A title in a VR enabled version that terrified all who played it. Alien: Isolation was the virtual reality hit of the show and with good reason.

Not only does it attempt to reignite a misunderstood genre in survival horror, but its relying on a sci-fi franchise that has had a very tumultuous past decade. The Alien vs Predator movies confused more than entertained, Prometheus is a cryptic tale that the casual filmgoer probably wouldnt connect with the Alien universe, and Colonial Marines really needs no introduction. More or less, the Alien brand has had a lot of trouble regaining the respect it earned in the 70s and 80s. And yet, rather admirably, it still has a lot of significance in 2014.
