Square Enix lays off about 12 developers at Crystal Dynamics; job cuts came from new IP team and won't affect Tomb Raider sequel.
Square Enix has cut roughly 12 positions at today.
The cuts came from the team working on the company's previously announced all-new franchise and will not affect development on the .
"We've made some decisions at Crystal Dynamics last week around the second project we#146;re working on, which has resulted in a small number of roles (roughly 12) becoming redundant as we re-scope the project," the company said.
"This doesn't affect the Tomb Raider development team, who as confirmed last week are well into production on a next-generation sequel," the statement goes on. "We're a close-knit team at Crystal and wouldn't be making these changes if we didn't feel it was absolutely necessary. We'll help those affected as best we can and we want to thank them for their hard work and commitment."
The new IP from Crystal Dynamics was . No information about the game has been revealed since.

After spending time working with Crystal Dynamics, Avalanche Studios, Mad Max director George Miller, and Star Wars creator George Lucas, Barlog said he was "ready to come back home."

Barlog would not go into specifics regarding his current project at Sony Santa Monica, but said he is hiring an Ocean's 11-style cast of developers to work on a "freaking huge" game.

The Tomb Raider franchise will live on into the next generation, as Square Enix has confirmed that a sequel to Crystal Dynamics' 2013 release is currently underway.
