Crytek could make a truly brilliant game. So why hasn't it managed it?

Why is the studio's finest work still the original Crysis?.
Talking computers are pretty common nowadays, but I've yet to run into an iOS app that captures the ears quite as forcibly as Crysis 2's Nanosuit, a predatory Onesie composed of semi-sentient hexagons, which sounds like a gorilla making sweet, sweet love to a vocoder. I can still recall the first time I heard it whisper the magical phrase "tactical options available", populating my HUD with tempting triangles as I stepped from a sewage pipe to bring about the ruin of some upstart aliens. It didn't matter that I went onto squander those options, running up against cliffs while giant purple teamsters fired missiles into my titanium bottom. I'd felt, briefly but arrestingly, like the Terminator's wayward son.

Conflict over who owned the rights to the franchise.

Three employees have told Kotaku that Crytek's work on the game was cancelled after a dispute with Microsoft over who owned the intellectual rights to the franchise.

The sources added that Microsoft is no longer sending Crytek cheques and in March employees at the Frankfurt studio weren't paid.

Microsoft said it has "nothing to announce about the future of the franchise at this time," which certainly leaves an opening for the series to return, perhaps at a new studio.
