Ever since I saw htoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary (henceforth Firefly Diary) teased in gaming magazines in Japan, I was intrigued. The art style looked fantastic and I do love puzzle games. The game apparently made use of touch controls on the Vita in a unique manner. I was ecstatic when the game was announced for North America and Europe. I finally got my hands on it a few weeks ago for review and it has been quite an experience.

| htoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary Review | GIZORAMA

Jordan Lemos, GIZORAMA - "When I first saw The Firefly Diary, I was more than intrigued. It immediately made me think of Limbo, an indie game that has an interesting art style, no dialogue, and a fair bit of trial and error. The idea for The Firefly Diary actually came out of an inner-company contest for new games. The game that won was turned into the full game that is The Firefly Diary. If anything can be said about the creation of the game, its that more companies should look inside for new ideas that they can put out with minimal resources. As for the game itself, youre not going to hear any dialogue or see any text past the first few minutes. Its this minimalist design that was one of my favorite parts of the game. There is no map taking up a part of the screen, no health meter, no anything. The screen itself is dark and seems to flicker, adding to the mystery and atmosphere in the game. All in all, I love how the game looks, but looks can definitely be deceiving."

Jae Lee writes: Im no stranger to puzzle games. Professor Layton is one of my favorite series of all time and Ive also quite enjoyed other non-conventional titles in the genre like Rain and many others over the years.
So when I started playing through The Firefly Diary I felt like I was treading familiar grounds. However, it didnt take long for me to realize that there was something different about this one. It was intensely difficulty and not in a good way.

| htoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary Review: Deadly Imprecision | Technology Tell

Technology Tell writes, "Mion will die a lot in The Firefly Diary. This bothered me at first, because I believed she was dying because I was unskilled. Also, because shes a precious, little baby who has the misfortune of starring in this game. However, I quickly realized that I wasnt the problem. The Firefly Diary is. This is the sort of demanding game where a few seconds can mean the difference between life and death, but people wont know misfortune waits until after theyve experienced it."

| htoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary - PS Vita Review | Chalgyr's Game Room

Chalgyr's Game Room writes:
The Firefly Diary is an interesting experiment that suffers an interesting paradox. What should be its strengths often turn out to be the game's greatest weaknesses. Visually htoL#niQ: The Firefly Diary does a beautiful job of creating a world of light and shadow around our quiet protagonist Mion, but that atmosphere is squandered by some questionable game mechanics that might wear players' patience thin before the game's conclusion.
Nippon Ichi Software is known for some very stylized titles, and The Firefly Diary is no exception. With more color than Limbo, it is hard not to draw some comparisons to the two games at a glance. The visuals are lovely, charming even. The fireflies glow beautifully as they interweave between light and shadow, Mion slowly trailing along behind one firefly while the other manipulates the environment. There is a sort of minimalist storytelling here that is also reminiscent to Limbo. Clearly something creepy is at play...
