The Phantom Pains open-world shift is a massive risk for Metal Gear Solid, but it pays off

Gaetano Prestia of MMGN writes: Prior to the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Id played the game for almost two hours at various events. Each time the hosts would give us a rundown of the basics and then essentially let us roam free to do whatever we wanted, however we wanted. Heres a little insight into video game preview events: that sort of flexibility and freedom is rare. In hindsight, it certainly suited the style and design of The Phantom Pain, a game that loudly distances itself from the linearity and at-times overbearing narrative drive of its predecessors.
Since the games release Ive put in roughly 20 hours, and find myself a mere 12 percent through. Reflecting upon my many mindless playthroughs of the game so far, it had me thinking about the games place within the open-world genre. Does an open-world suit Metal Gear Solid, and is The Phantom Pain really among the genres best?

| Does the Apocalypse Have to be so Doom and Gloom?

The post-apocalyptic setting seems to be a fan favourite place to send gamers over the past few years; classics such as the Fallout series, The Last of Us, Rage and the Metro games are but to name a few of the titles that have transported us to a barren wastelands that, for the most part, its probably best arent actually real life locations.
But with all the doom and gloom surrounding these fictional wastelands and the small glimmers of hope that occasionally pop up in a plot line where humanity is all but non-existent, or an even more maniacal and mistrusting representation of what it once was, is there really such a need for absolutely EVERYTHING to be so run down and dingy?

COG Writes: Point Click adventures on a console are far and few between, but this game shows how they can be done right and how a console controller is not a hinderance for this genre.

Its that time of the year again. We know the rest of 2015s release schedule is all sewn up, so theres only looking to the future to be done and that means cataloguing all the known quantities (like Uncharted 4, a new Zelda, Doom 4 etc.) before looking to all the unexpected awesomeness thats no doubt going to drop in between.
Lest you forget, although this year has seen a resounding return to form for the industry in everything from The Witcher 3 and Metal Gear Solid V heading up the must-haves list, to Microsoft pulling their finger out and ditching the Kinect, such a close-fought console war will rage on into 2016.

OX writes: "In this latest episode of our Shenmue 2 adventures we finally learn the last of the four Wude.
It quickly becomes apparent that, while we know what the Wude are, we are terrible at at least two of them. This necessitates lengthy sessions of temple sweeping and book stacking in order to bring our disposition line with that of the calm, focused kung fu master Xiuying, who we now live with, I guess?"

GT:
The music/rhythm genre is on the rise, it seems. After the long drought for the genre that became bloated with countless rhythm titles in the mid 2000s, it appears the planets may have aligned once again in favor of those gamers with a passion of hitting buttons along with music queues. The recent announcements of Rock Band and Guitar Hero making a harmonious return to the gaming scene might prove that gamers are still interested in the once overwhelming genre, as long as there is still uniqueness and originality. Does this port of a 2-year-old music game on the 3DS have what it takes to stand up to that scrutiny that rehashes of the past few years have created?
