Etrian Mystery Dungeon is an example of two great ideas coming together like peanut butter and chocolate. It's a mix of the Shiren the Wanderer-style Mystery Dungeon roguelike gameplay and Etrian Odyssey-style party composition and design, and it successfully combines the strengths of both genres. It isn't a perfect mix, and some elements do clash, but it works more often than it doesn't.

Combining the maddening and dedicated labyrinths of Etrian Odyssey with Mystery Dungeon's ode to indifferent but committed variability would seem to be the videogame equivalent of pushing an immovable object against an unstoppable force.
It's an attractive paradox, and, rather than explode on contact, both series' unique strengths coalesce into a grueling exploration of applied skill and tough love.

When one thinks of a mash-up game in the last couple years, generally its either made up of one of its parts more than the other or a deviation from both that doesnt cater to either pieces of its source material. So when Atlus and Spike Chunsoft announced their own mashup of the Etrian Odyssey and Mysterious Dungeon series it seemed like a match made in heaven, combining the party-building and story lore of the Etrian series and the hard but rewarding dungeon crawling aspects of the Mysterious Dungeon series. That alone isnt a surefire recipe for success, but both sides managed to meet that lofty goal with Etrian Mystery Dungeon.

It's Dungeon Keeper in all but name. Not a great deal has changed, but it's not like a lot needed to. Brimming with style, but also with enough bugs to scare off Bear Grylls.

Video game mashups can be a great thing. Taking two different IPs and blending them together can create something that's just as good, if not better than the original. At the very least, seeing concepts, characters and systems spun off into different contexts can deliver a refreshing romp for fans of the source materials.

Given the number of entries released on both DS and 3DS, plenty of gamers will be familiar with both the Etrian Odyssey and Mystery Dungeon franchises, even if the latter is best known for its Pokémon crossovers. While the core mechanics of each series greatly differ, they both draw inspiration from old-school takes on the RPG genre that placed their emphasis on dungeon diving, strategic planning, and a high level of difficulty. Both franchises have earned respectable fanbases who appreciate this approach to game design. Now, Atlus has taken these two series and put them in a blender to create Etrian Mystery Dungeon.

On the tail end of the successful Persona/Etrian mash-up that was Persona Q, Atlus and Spike Chunsoft combined efforts are bringing Etrian Mystery Dungeon into the 3DS RPG line-up. Although Etrian has known success thus far in the west, Spikes Mystery Dungeon has mostly become known outside Japan through their collaborative titles like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. RPG fans can sate their Etrian cravings and get to know a more distant acquaintance at the same time with this enjoyable marriage of familiar dungeon crawl with randomization and tactical switch-ups.

Like so many games spun off from Spike Chunsoft's Mystery Dungeon series, Etrian Mystery Dungeon takes a while to get going. The first couple of dungeons feel almost hilariously toothless, and even the bosses pose little challenge. As an RPG, let alone a roguelike, EMD does not make the best first impression.

DTOID:
Mashups are often born purely for fanservice-related reasons, and as you can probably guess, the results are mixed. For instance, it would be tough for an RPG developer to make an action game based on two different puzzle properties, but odder mixes have been done in the past.
With Etrian Mystery Dungeon, it feels like a match made in heaven. Spike Chunsoft and Atlus have been making RPGs for what seems like a lifetime, and Etrian Odyssey is basically a Mystery title already.
