Battlefield 4 | Codec Moments

Battlefield 4 is pitched as the launch title for the next Gen consoles; whilst Codec Moments are certain it will showcase the PS4 and Xbox Ones capabilities, thanks to the Frostbite 3 engine it still looks good on the PS3 and the Xbox 360. In fact the opening few seconds of the game made us question the need for the next gen consoles; if this is the result on an ancient PS3 (mine is almost an antique), we cant wait to see what the PS4 has up its sleeve... but how does it play?

What comes to mind when we think of modern shooters? A linear story line, shallow character depth, repetitive missions, and ultra-realistic graphics- just to name a few. The last one seems to be particularly important to video game publisher Electronic Arts, who felt the need to put a big Powered by Frostbite 3 stamp on the front cover of the newest release in their triple-A multiplayer shooter franchise, Battlefield. On the back cover, there are plenty of explosions and guns, but no blurb, which left me to learn for myself what kind of campaign experience it has to offer. So does this games flashy look mask a hidden treasure? Or will it just meet the criteria that fans of modern shooters enjoy so much, and nothing more?

DICE and Electronic Arts have spent the better part of a year hyping the latest release in the successful Battlefield franchise, boasting various new features, including but not limited to Frostbite 3, their new rendering engine, an improved single player experience, and Levolution, their term for a system that allows players to affect large-scale elements of their multiplayer maps. The question is whether or not they made good on those promises.
