Next-gen versions remain undated, but 360, PS3, and PC versions of this year's Need for Speed will be released on November 19.

EA has announced , saying that the next entry in the long-running racing series will launch for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 19.

Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions are in development, but are not yet dated.

Need for Speed Rivals is being developed by the new, Gothenberg-based studio Ghost Games. The game will use DICE's Frostbite 3 engine, EA says.

The game blends elements of Criterion Games' Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted, offering up a large open world--dubbed Redview County--and allowing players to take the role of a racer or a police officer. Cars are reported to be customisable, and Ghost Games claims the game will seamlessly integrate both its single-player and multiplayer gameplay with a feature called AllDrive, which lets players drop in and out of each other's worlds.

The series' social tracking service Autolog will also return.

Need for Speed's almost 20-year history has seen multiple developers handle the game, and the series has seen both ups and downs. Black Box's were both well received, however, and their creative director, Craig Sullivan, has joined the team at Ghost Games to oversee development of Rivals.

EA exec says Xbox One/PS4 are a generation ahead of top-spec PCs

EA technology officer also says the cloud is going to be an "integral" part of gaming in the future.

EA executive vice president and chief technical officer Rajat Teneja has said that the architectures of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are "a generation ahead of the highest end PC on the market."

, the former Microsoft employee said the next-gen hardware of both Sony and Microsoft is "a significant inflection point in the history of our industry" that will be "as profound as the introduction of smartphones or Facebook to the market."

"Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have adopted electronics and an integrated systems-on-a -chip (soc) architecture that unleashes magnitudes more compute and graphics power than the current generation of consoles," says Teneja. "These architectures are a generation ahead of the highest end PC on the market and their unique design of the hardware, the underlying operating system and the live service layer create one of the most compelling platforms to reimagine game mechanics."

The importance of the cloud will also tie into the future of games, according to Teneja. "The power of connected data is going to be an integral part of the gaming experience," he said. "We see 2.5bn monthly game sessions and 50 [terabytes] of daily telemetry data on our network alone. The Xbox Live network required 500 servers when it launched a decade ago and as was mentioned yesterday, they are now provisioning 300,000 servers to handle Xbox data in the cloud. That growth is staggering, but it also means we#147;ll really start to see more examples of true cross-device play."

"You don#147;t have to be an engineer or even a gamer like me to appreciate the power of these new devices," he concluded.

EA this week announced that . DICE's Frostbite engine will also play a key part in EA's next-gen development.

Microsoft announced the Xbox One earlier this week. for formation on the successor to the Xbox 360

News: Is Need For Speed 2013 a reboot of NFS: Underground Rivals?

Added: 23.05.2013 9:32 | 5 views | 0 comments

Second screenshot of unannounced racer appears online.

A message notifying fans to expect information on the game today was posted by EA last night, alongside a second screenshot and the note "The Rivalry Begins".

'Rivalry'?

Could this year's NFS be linked to PSP racer Need For Speed: Underground Rivals? Given EA's decision to revise various Need For Speed sub-series in recent years, we wouldn't be too surprised.

Need For Speed 2013 is expected to be a cross-gen title in development at Ghost Games using Frostbite 3. Criterion is also expected to be assisting in development.

Expect more later today.
