Tecmo Koei's offbeat new Ninja Gaiden spin-off is a scrappy and remorselessly difficult brawler that isn't anywhere near as bad as you may have heard.

Up Up Down Down: Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z

GameZone: "What happens when you get former Mega Man designer Keiji Inafune and his company Comcept and team them up with Team Ninja? Apparently, you get a delightfully wacky zombie game set in the Ninja Gaiden universe. Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is heavy on the hack-and-slash action, dripping with (entertainingly) asinine adult humor, and filled with ridiculous moments. Unfortunately, a number of imperfections rear their ugly heads all too often. Even then, Ninja Gaiden Z is good, goofy fun."

Kne McKown writes: I wanted to love Yaiba, I really did, but every time it does something interesting, its flaws come screaming to the surface. This game is a mess and not in a good way. The concept of a more animated Ninja Gaiden game with goofy characters and the same precise combat sounds wonderful, but Yaiba focuses more on flare and forgoes the superb controls of the previous entries. Mixed with a fixed camera and some truly dreadful writing, this title disappoints from beginning to end. I couldnt stomach playing more than 20 mins during any session, and that is a sign of a poorly designed experience.

Avoiderdragon: Every once in a while, spin-offs of existing games come up to liven things up and show a twist to whats familiar. However, when that includes something that many agree to be overdone and cliche, then maybe its best to leave it be. The Yakuza series had Yakuza: Dead Souls, which was not really necessary (and it didnt help that the 2011 Tohoku earthquake/tsunami delayed its release). That wasnt the end though as another Japanese franchise has been given the zombie treatment with Yaiba.
