The Ninja Gaiden series is well known for its fast-paced action, furious hack-and-slash game play, and over the top violence. Now Team Ninja have teamed up with Keiji Inafune Comcept, and Spark Unlimited to bring us Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z a game that takes the staples of the franchise and wraps them up in a colourful cel-shaded adventure that has you slaughtering undead hordes en masse, while hunting down Ryu Hayabusa himself. The result is a rollercoaster of dismemberment that might not be for every Ninja Gaiden fan, but an entertaining ride nonetheless.

A hack-and-slash Ninja Gaiden spin-off that's dead on arrival.
Yaiba is a staggering asshole. Not the good, Larry David kind of asshole, he's not strolling around a zombie-infested futuristic city being ostracised for his hilariously ill-timed outbursts of etiquette-piercing honesty. No, he's the genuinely unlikeable kind - a clumsy mash of painfully uninventive swearing, one-note euphemism and straight-up misogyny. Yaiba is essentially a 13-year-old boy's idea of a foul-mouthed ninja, living in a seven-year-old's doodle of a zombie apocalypse. He's not ironic, he's not post-ironic, he's simply bad.

Review: Yaiba Ninja Gaiden Z shows no self-respect

An unforgivably sloppy game; broken and aimless.
Yaiba, the highly dubious protagonist of this highly atrocious spin-off from the main Ninja Gaiden series, seems to think that he's really cool. He sees himself as an edgy, rough-hewn, badboy charmer; the kind of guy who's as gruff and no-nonsense as he is sharp-tongued and charismatic. He seems to think that he's a big hit with the ladies. He seems to think that he's cyborg-ninja Han Solo. In truth, he is none of those things.
