Cubed:
Back in 2006, the original Gears of War was the killer app for the Xbox 360. Cliff Blezenski, the designer, took gameplay concepts and ideas from tried and true titles like Kill Switch's cover-based mechanics that were not popular at the time, as well as the off-centre, over-the-shoulder camera perspective, and elaborate melee kills from the Shinji Mikami masterpiece, Resident Evil 4. With these influences, Epic Games would use its Unreal Engine, which was then known for being used exclusively for Unreal Tournament games, to craft a third-person shooter with visuals unseen by the world. The original Gears of War was one of the most important titles on the Xbox 360, which helped secure a strong install base, as well as set the trend of so many future action games that would follow during that generation. Now that Gears of War has been remastered as Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, it is no surprise that this version is gorgeous, but just how well has the gameplay aged? Find ou...

Brian: I cant stop thinking about how refreshing Gears of War: Ultimate Edition feels. This first struck me as odd both because the original Gears is nine years old, and because Ive played through that game several times.

Metro:
One of the most iconic shooters of the modern era gets a remake for the Xbox One, with new graphics and new multiplayer.
Halo might still be Microsofts biggest exclusive but no franchise embodies the Xbox brand better than Gears Of War. Violent, cocksure, technically impressive, and very obviously American Gears Of War is also one of the most influential video games of the last decade. And believe it or not it has been nearly 10 years since the original game was released on Xbox 360. A lot of effort has been put into this remake, but its to the games credit how nothing fundamental has had to be changed.

There is really little to say about Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, other than it feels like it was meant to be remastered, it just works. Gears of War is a great franchise that brought about a brand new type of shooter, and a fresh take on multiplayer. It is one of Microsofts strongest franchises and needs to be put into the spotlight. One thing is for sure, Gears of War is in safe hands.

DTOID:
For better and for worse, Gears of War helped shape the past generation of gaming. Bursting onto the scene in 2006, it helped solidify now-common tropes like chest-high walls, brown and gray shooters, and muscle-bound space marines. It didn't invent any of those, but it certainly helped elevate them to the level of Hollywood blockbuster that everyone wanted to mimic.

Addam starts off by taking us through his experiences with Everyones Gone To The Rapture and Sonic Dreams Collection, which were still not entirely sure is a real thing. Kyle shares his thoughts on Rare Replay and Gus talks a little Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. This all leads to a discussion on the recent trend of remastering games and we share which games we would love to see get the remastered treatment.

VG:
Gear Of War: Ultimate Edition is exactly the game you expect it to be. For those that still don't know what that is, it's the original in the series completely remastered so it looks pretty enough to justify running on an Xbox One. The real joy, however, comes in remembering just how good the first Gears Of War is.

Last year, Microsoft went big with the incredible . But itÄ‚Ë€â„Ës only the original Gears of War. Parts 2 and 3 are notably absent, which makes this "ultimate edition" feel somewhat incomplete, despite the enormous amount of extras which include levels for the campaign that was only released on PC.

Mehdi at Press Start Australia said "The Coalition has done great work in bringing Gears of War to a new generation, though its not always without its problems. Changes in general are welcome and well-executed, though some unkempt issues of the original and some compression artifacts do arise here and there. Some technical issues aside, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is an excellent ode to the original which along with backwards compatibility for the sequels will make for an excellent opportunity for new players to introduce themselves to the franchise, along with returning players who want to re-live this classic Xbox 360 title."
