Gears of War: Ultimate Edition Review | CGR

The reviewer writes: "Gears of War has always been a great game. It didnt need a remaster to make it better. There would still be people buying the Xbox 360 version, especially if it came to backwards compatibility. But this new and improved version is amazing. The graphics are stunning and the gameplay is very smooth. Most remasters bring a lot of the problems from the original with them, and its rare for a remaster to truly have a next gen feeling, but this one does. This could actually pass off as a brand new game."

| Gears of War Ultimate Edition's New Gnasher Execution Mode Gets Messy Fast

OX writes: New for Gears of War Ultimate Edition is the Gnasher Execution multiplayer game type: a frenetic two-versus-two shotgun battle in an extremely claustrophobic map. As you can imagine, it's a matter of seconds before someone, usually us, is blown into giant chunks of meaty kibble. If you like your multiplayer matches settled Thunderdome style, this is the mode for you.

GB:
By now, youve probably pressed a button to stick to cover, held the left trigger to peek over it, and the right trigger to shoot out of it thousands of times. But few of the games inspired by the original Gears of War utilize the formula as well as developer Epic Games did back in 2006. Gears of War highlights just how important feedback is in creating the sense of feel in games; the Lancer machine gun makes Locust bleed in exaggerated spurts, making it powerful; a point-blank Gnasher shotgun shell shatters enemies into spongy bits with the gross sound effects to match, making it clear how strong the weapon is up close.

GI:
Upon its initial release in 2006, few games could match the pure visual grandeur of Gears of War, and the cover-based shooting mechanics were similarly novel. Cut to 2015, and the remake may not have the graphical chops to compete with the very best in the business, but The Coalitions loving recraft is certainly pretty enough to feel at home on Xbox One. A head-to-toe visual and audio overhaul is as comprehensive as anyone could hope for. Gameplay sees a more minor adjustment, but franchise fans on console should also be attracted to the presence of PC and DLC content that never before made its way to Xbox.

William Schwartz - "Somewhere between a remake and a remaster, the work done to the original Gears of War is evident at every turn. Youll come to see the impressive new coat of paint, but youll stay for the timeless multiplayer."
