Review: Guacamelee | KaboomShark

Developed by DrinkBox Studios, developer of Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack (another great Vita platformer), Guacamelee is a new beast entirely. It aims squarely at retro action platformers like Castlevania, with a deeply rooted focus on exploration. Its a call-back, a love-letter, and homage. It succeeds in that classic flavor while bringing along a spicy helping of modern cultural references, and cute humor, all wrapped in a soft tortilla shell.

OPM: Forget jetting off to Acapulco this summer as holiday destinations go, Guacamelees utterly charming hypersaturated hyperbole of Mexico offers way more fun. Playing as farm hand turned lucha libre warrior Juan, youre tasked with saving the world (and your love interest) from skeletal demon Carlos Calaca.

Guacamelee, simply put, is a testament to the abilities of small developers. It's a small experience that exudes an air of quality games with ten times development team size and a hundred times the budget can only aspire to.

Excerpt: "Grab your tights for a stylized romp through Mexican-inspired folklore full of danger, exploration, and well-timed humor.
The action gets underway quickly when Juan, who narrowly escapes death. He is taken to the Underworld, and escapes, becoming a super-powered Luchador that is the savior of a small town in Mexico. Comparisons can be made to the hybrid genre, Metroidvania as this game very much is. Youll traverse an open-world, wall jump, transform, collect new powers, and even go between planes of the living and dead."
