CGM Reviews: Guacamelee

Guacamelee a game in which a Mexican wrestler can transform into a chicken to reach hidden areas, where he might learn from his mystical goat master how to suplex skeletons in sombreros.
Sure, it may sound like someone drank too much tequila out in the hot sun, but its also one of the best indie experiences on your Playstation 3 or PS Vita. The creation of Toronto-based developer DrinkBox Studios, Guacamelee is a 2-D beat-em-up platformer, in which new abilities give you access to new parts of a vivid, mazelike world. The genre is commonly known as Metroidvania, and the games influences become obvious after you break your first Choozo statue or run into the mosaic of Simon Belmont.

You may not now this about me, but before joining PSLS, I was a professional wrestler. Fighting under the name Huevos Rancheros, I was the best around. Sadly, my career ended thanks to an unfortunate donkey accident on one dreary August evening.

GamesRadar: "When you put together a little Metroid, Castlevania, Super Mario, and Mutant Blobs Attack! then immerse it in Mexican folklore, you get Guacamelee! A meaty experience with terrific combat, lovely visuals, and a smart sense of humor, it scratches an itch thats being ignored more often than not these days. Despite some frustrating moments and difficulty spikes, its a terrific game for PlayStation Network gamers looking for something both familiar and different."

In my mind, DrinkBox Studios basically transformed into one of my favorite developers overnight, and they did an excellent job with Guacamelee. As a solid mix of combat, exploration, and heart, its a shining example for Metroidvanias everywhere.
