| FPS games can enhance players' memories, says study

Netherlands-based Leiden University says video games enhance the brain's working memory.
A team at the Netherlands-based Leiden University has published a research paper that says video games, specifically first-person shooters, enhance the memory capacity of players.
The results, published in the journal Psychological Research (), are based off a test comparing the working memory of those who played at least five hours of shooter games weekly to those who never played video games.
Working memory can be thought of as the brain's short-term memory, . "Working memory can help us overcome a particular problem or perform a task, like mental arithmetic, using a phone number, or following a set of directions. However the amount of information we can hold is limited and the information itself is very unstable - a sudden distraction and the information is lost and you have to start again from scratch."
Dr. Lorenza Colzato, who works at the Leiden University's cognitive psychology unit, said that "we think that video game experience trains your brain to become more flexible in the updating and monitoring of new information, enhancing the memory capacity of the gamers."
Colzato says FPS games "require players to develop a flexible mindset to rapidly react and monitor fast moving visual and auditory stimuli."
"We believe that gaming is a fast and easy way to enhance your memory," concluded Colzato.

| How Infinity Ward Can Turnaround the Call of Duty Series
Added: 28.04.2013 2:17 | 8 views | 0 comments
Gadget Mill: Lately we have gone back to playing the Call of Duty series on our PS3. This includes games such as the legendary Call of Duty 4 up to the latest Black Ops 2. As you would probably know Black Ops 2 is packed with way more features and customisation in comparison to Call of Duty 4 which is more or less plain and simple in comparison. However with that said and to be honest we seemed to be enjoying ourselves way more playing the classic COD4 in comparison to the other later titles.
Our first instinct for this was that it was all down to nostalgia reasons playing old maps such as Crash, Crossfire etc. Doing so did have a slight impact on our feelings towards the game. But the more we played COD4 the more it felt fluid and balanced. So we decided to give Black Ops 2 a shot again to figure out what went wrong; after all Treyarch did emphasise how balanced Black Ops 2 was meant to be right?

| Review: Star Trek A Disappointing Stardate -- The Analog Shtick
Added: 26.04.2013 18:17 | 16 views | 0 comments
Movie tie-ins are widely considered a bane among gamers. But with interest in a movie being enough to swindle some less-informed individuals into buying one of these apparent cash-ins, they just seem to keep coming. However occasionally something rather surprising happens. A tie-in game is given to a development team with some sort of merit to their name, and is given the triple-A treatment with up-to-date graphics and gameplay tight as can be. While many doubted, I silently thought Star Trek would end up like one of these highly successful tie-ins. While developer Digital Extremes may not be as widely renowned as some, The Darkness II was proof that they could put together a entirely enjoyable shooter that even includes a decent narrative. With Star Trek, something must have gone horrible awry.

Vigil co-founder Ryan Stefanelli offers advice on taking the franchise forward.
"I cant go much into detail about this and I don't know who else was bidding," wrote Pollice on the franchise's newly opened Nordic Games forum.
