Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory (PlayStation 3) Review - Push Square

Push Square: "While this may only be a very average JRPG at best, despite all of its flaws and framerate issues, Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory is absurdly lovable. Redeemed by its cute, static 2D anime sequences, colourful locations, tongue-in-cheek industry references, and rewarding tactical combat, there is a sizeable amount of enjoyable gameplay that can be salvaged from the otherwise disappointing story concept. That is, if you have a spare thumb that you can permanently attach to the square button in order to skip past all of the mundane cut-scenes about slippers, naps, and group bathing. Yes, group bathing."

Gaming Age: "This clever take on the console wars tells a fun story, but does little else to capture the audience unfortunately."

From NIS America, Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory is a JRPG that brings some new gameplay and narrative elements into the field of a very hard to compete genre. The game delivers some interesting ideas to the table such as in game rewards, an interesting world to explore and an abundance of fourth wall breaking. Now does the game stand up to its competitors or does it cower before the presence of more dominant and well established JRPGs? Lets have a look and find out.

GR:The trio of goddesses in the Hyperdimension Neptunia series represent Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft products, all vying for dominion over the world of Gamindustri. It's an exciting (albeit contrived) setup for a quirky JRPG, with plenty of moe female characters in skintight outfits, mixed with an allegorical adventure meant to represent the long-running console wars. Unfortunately, a game can't operate on premise alone, and that's Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory's greatest downfall. It's a small progression from the previous entries, but with each tottering step forward, it stumbles one pace back.

Impulse Gamer: "Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory does have its issues but if you can move pass the graphics and sometimes dated gameplay, there is actually some gaming gold to be found. In terms of completion, we completed this title is just over 40 hours which is huge and definitely gives you value for money, especially if you like Japanese RPG. The highlight of the game is the bizarre storyline that not only mimics the real-world gaming industry but patronises it at the same time to create some truly hilarious moments."

When NIS America released the first of what would become three Hyperdimension Neptunia video games a couple of years ago, it was a fresh and light-hearted take on video game fanboyism with female idols taking the roles of the major video game consoles of Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The player took the role of Neptunia, who represents the former SEGA game consoles. The second game, Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, repeated the formula with mixed results when it swapped personifications of home consoles for handhelds.
Now, with Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory, developers Compile Heart and Idea Factory are at it again - this time with Neptunia going back in time to a representation of the video game industry in 1989. With it comes a handful of changes to the series. Some are for the better, but most seem like change for the sake of change.

Travis Bruno of Capsule Computers writes:
"For quite some time now there have been various franchises which have seen annual releases. These include games such as Assassins Creed, Call of Duty, a multitude of sports titles and more. However of these games, there is one annual franchise which comes as quite a surprise and that is the Hyperdimension Neptunia. Over the last few years Compile Heart and NIS America have managed to bring a Neptunia game to Western shores on a yearly basis and each time the series has made a unique JRPG splash full of self-aware humor, bright colors and enjoyable gameplay. With the third release in the series, Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory now out in stores, does this title still offer everything fans fo the series have come to love?"
