Indie games had a large presence at PAX Prime this year, but there were plenty of AAA titles as well. Big-name releases like Battleborn, The Division, and Star Wars Battlefront were available at the convention with hands-on demos, but one AAA game stood out among the rest. Ubisoft's For Honor featured one of the more memorable demos of PAX Prime, and it was the kind of experience that I wasn't expecting when I went to the event. In fact, I wasn't expecting to be surprised by any AAA games.

USGamer:
With the proliferation of indie development, I feel like I've seen an increase in one genre above all others: the Metroidvania. That style of side-scrolling platformer married with exploration and RPG-style progression seems to have struck a chord in a number of developers. In the past few months, I've played Axiom Verge, Chasm, Heart Forth Alicia, and Xeodrifter. Each title builds on the genre while heading in its own direction.

GR:
Puzzle games don't have to reinvent the wheel to succeed, but a creative mechanic goes a long way. Case in point: Mushroom 11. One look and it appears to be a game in which the player controls a giant blob organism and pushes it along with the mouse. There's only a small bit of truth to that premise, and my hands-on time with Mushroom 11 at PAX Prime's Indie Megabooth revealed how the game's control scheme helps create a unique puzzle experience.

That sound was just snapping twigs underfoot, right?
Microsoft's Xbox Indie event at PAX offered a number of opportunities to see games the console maker and publisher is excited to show for its indie platform. Through the Woods is a walking simulator/horror game based on Norwegian folklore in which a young mother searches for her son who has been abducted by a creature, which you track in a forest at night.

GR:
I saw Poncho a couple weeks back at a San Francisco event put on by publisher Rising Star Games and hadn't gotten around to a preview write-up before PAX hit. To no real surprise, the game had a long line at Nintendo's pre-PAX Indie Showcase Nindies@Nintendo event. Like a lot of the indies on Nintendo's slate, Poncho aims for a certain retro-cool nostalgia while mixing it with gameplay elements that would have been impossible in the era that it referencesand it thoroughly hits the target.
