Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Review | GameSpew

Graham at GameSpew writes: "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the last final hurrah for Hideo Kojima, and the last breath in the (Kojima made) Metal Gear games, but rather than a final gasp, its an almighty roar. Kojima is going out with an impossibly loud bang with quite possibly the greatest open world game ever made.
Im going to get straight to the point here. This is one of the greatest open world video games ever made. In a genre that has been stagnating for years under the weight of huge worlds littered with shallow side quests, minor distractions and pathetic mini-games, Kojima sweeps this cluttered table clean with The Phantom Pain and keeps on going right into the sunset. Metal Gear Solid V is a vast game, and untangling all the many little strands of detail and complexity that make up each moment of the game makes it hard for me to know where to even begin describing it."

If The Phantom Pain is to be the final Metal Gear Solid game, then Hideo Kojima has bid farewell to his series with a masterwork. MGS's first foray into a truly open world has served up its most in-depth and intricate gameplay, in turn creating Konami's most moreish stealth espionage title to date.

Metal Gear fans have been waiting for this a long time, and now Snake is finally back to kick more ass. When I played Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of Patriots on PlayStation 3, I remember thinking how it wouldve been cool if the mission areas were a bit more open. As it turns out, my wishes were granted. This time around, Hideo Kojima and the developers saw to it that players have all the freedom they need to carry out their tasks. In Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Snake isnt restricted to taking one or two or three routes to his goal. Theres nearly an infinite number of ways to carry out your assignments.

| MGSV: When Single Player is this Good, a Broken Online Aint no Thang

In between the unadulterated love that Antony and Darren cant stop themselves from bestowing upon Kojima Sans masterpiece, the question of Phantom Pain getting a free pass regarding the broken online aspect of the game is surprising. Especially when such an unstable connection would draw plenty of flak were it any other game. Does the sheer magic of the single player excuse this?
Antony continues his addiction with Disney Infinity 3.0 and assures us all he can quit at any time (as he pre-orders yet another figure!)
In the news section the Sparks' talk about the new Guinness World Records 2016 Gamers Edition and with the announcement of Ubi-land, have fun coming up with ideal gaming theme parks!!
Also discussed is yet another remastered release on the next gen consoles Castle Crashers. With this release, Gears of War: Ultimate and the upcoming Uncharted Collection, has the gaming industry turned a corner and finally started to do remasters right?

GamesTM:
All the fears surrounding Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain have proven unfounded. The probability that this is Hideo Kojimas final entry to the series he created hasnt resulted in a half-baked effort. The change in playing style to a very large, very open world that allows you to take things on in a much more freeform style than previous games hasnt spoiled what made those earlier games so enthralling. In fact, what we have here with The Phantom Pain is Kojima Productions masterpiece: a swansong so astoundingly assured, rich in quality and absurdly fun to play that it has immediately raised the bar for every blockbuster game that follows.

Tony Polanco from The Koalition writes:
"Ever since the release of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, series creator Hideo Kojima has said that each installment in the franchise would be his last. It got to a point where it became a running joke, and when he said that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain would be his final game in the franchise, no one took him seriously. After the fallout he and parent company Konami had however, Kojimas promised departure from the series has indeed come. Despite the drama, I can think of no better way for Kojima to leave the franchise he created. The Phantom Pain is not only one of the strongest entries in the franchise, but one of the top games of this year."
