It would seem that 2013 has been the year of the prequel, with huge franchises such as Gears of War, Tomb Raider and God of War taking trips back in time and filling in some backstory.
God of War was never a series that delved too deeply into character development. We know who Kratos is and why he's disembowelling all and sundry but we never get to enter his head and empathise with him.

Steph-O of Play Legit Writes "Although showing Kratos imprisoned is appropriate, the amount of blurring, fading, and blowing out, and de-saturation used on the image is disappointing."

Analog Addiction writes: "God of War: Ascension is the latest game in the God of War series, featuring our angry Spartan warrior Kratos. Set before the events of the original trilogy, we are introduced to various aspects of Kratos that were not seen previously. With all that said, how does the latest Kratos adventure stack up against his previous entries?"

NGB: It has been just over three years since Kratos was last seen in our Playstation 3s. The Ghost of Sparta is back in God of War: Ascension, a prequel to the original trilogy. However, does Ascension compliment the God of War series, or is it an unnecessary addition?

"Acting as a prequel for the God of War series, Ascension takes place 10 years before the events of the first God of War as Kratos tries to break free of his blood-oath to Ares after he is tricked into murdering his own family."

So the big man Kratos returns by way of a temporal manoeuvre for one last blast at the tail-end of the PlayStation 3s time in the limelight. Sony Santa Monica have put their heart and soul into this latest installment in the high profile and ever so gory God of War series, opting to publish on the current generation of console presumably to avoid the mess of a launch window release that is expected in the maelstrom leading up to Christmas 2013. Its likely theres another reason too, namely to reach the pinnacle of what can be done with the outgoing Cell processor (compare with Naughty Dogs forthcoming The Last of Us). Alongside the expected technical brilliance and well known single player gameplay theyve developed a bespoke multiplayer element in a first for the franchise.

Paste: "For anyone who remembers Kratos at the beginningthe real beginning eight years ago, not the manufactured origins of Ascensionthe whole thing is just depressing now. You tell yourself maybe this is the last time, maybe the Ghost of Sparta is finally ready to grow up and move along. And if not, well, maybe its time to stop answering the phone."
