Its still good, its still God of War, but its a noticeably weaker offering than its predecessors, and isnt all that memorable. Kratos is back and so are his anger management issues. With a new God of War game, theres always a debate brewing somewhere whether or not the latest installment in the franchise is better than the last. Opinions are often split and polarized but no one can argue that these games pack some of the greatest epic moments that gaming has to offer.

God of War: Ascension is a prequel to the God of War series and it reveals how everything begun. It goes back to the past, to the very moment of Kratos punishment for breaking his blood oath with the god of war, Ares. The story is based on Greek Mythology, as the previous games, and players assume the role of Kratos, a fearless Spartan general who will fight for revenge and freedom; deceiving a god doesnt seem like an easy chore to accomplish but for Kratos nothing is out of reach.

While its ending was somewhat ambiguous and suggested there could be more to come, it was announced that the next title - God of War: Ascension - would be the first home console entry in the series to be a prequel, whereas Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta were both originally PSP titles that told sub-plots set in-between main entries. Not only that, Ascension would be the prequel, set before any of the other games thus far, looking deeper into the roots of Kratos lust for vengeance. This idea excited me, as Kratos humanity is always something that the series could expand upon the more we understand Kratos sense of loss, the more we can understand his rage. God of War PS2 came in and left us all open-mouthed. With a fantastic protagonist and an original, was one of the most remarkable games of the past generation, then continue to mark consoles like the PSP and PS3 games with great quality. The story of God of War marked by revenge is not exactly rich in many details, your gameplay is indeed far superior to everything else that one can find in the game, but the thread that unites all the games in the series is interesting enough to keep us stuck to the game. Ascension is a prequel to the trilogy that ended in 2010 with the release of God of War III. It is indeed the first since the games released for the PSP were also, but this is one that goes further back in history going back more than Kratos, shortly after the death of his family. It is also at this time that Kratos begins to doubt Ares, the God of War, and undermines the covenant he made with him.
