CGM Reviews: God of War: Ascension

The tale of Kratos came to a pretty definitive conclusion with God of War III, but naturally, with a series this successful, its hard for Sony to walk away. As a result, we once more travel to the past of the god/family/everyone else killer to get a little sight into what drives a man to such extremes. The events here seem to take place shortly before the original God of War as Kratos attempts to leave behind his service to Aeries and is punished by the Furies for breaking an oath to a god.

The God of War series made a mark on the gaming landscape by employing over-the-top brutality, colossally epic battles, and of course, an extremely violent protagonist. It's difficult to imagine any other franchise capturing the essence of one mans ruthlessness amidst the grand clash between men and gods. Now the Spartan warrior Kratos has returned for another round, and this time his rage is aimed at the keepers of oaths: the Furies.

Ken McKown writes: Kratos is not a good man. In fact Kratos is a very, very, VERY bad man. It is hard to believe that even after six games, the entire tale of the Ghost of Sparta hasnt been told. Sony has plenty of great franchises, but few spark the excitement that the God of War series does, or at least did. Kratos latest adventure is just as much a proper entry in the series as any that came before it, and the multiplayer actually isnt as terrible as I expected.

Ian Fisher writes: Once again technically impressive, the ever amazing visuals cant save God of War: Ascension from being a rather tepid and disappointing game. Lacking a true sense of soul and direction, Ascension seems to be all over the place with pacing that never finds its footing, combat that is riddled with small issues that prevent it from feeling refined or evolved, and a story that literally does nothing to advance or deepen the existing God of War mythos. Aside from a surprisingly deep and fun multiplayer mode, this latest entry in the God of War series sadly shows major franchise fatigue that will likely have the biggest fans of Kratos disappointed with what has been delivered to them.

MTV Multiplayer: "God of War: Ascension is a great addition to the God of War Saga, but it's still not the best entry into the series. Make no mistakes; Ascension is a "God of War" game from beginning to end. While Kratos does get few new toys to play with, it ultimately feels like more of the franchise that gamers have grown to love over the last few years."

Forbes - God of War games used to be some of the most anticipated properties on Sony systems, so its a bit curious as to why Ascension has been released with relatively little fanfare, and on the same day this week as another major release, Starcrafts Heart of the Swarm.

Rhys from Awesome Games writes: 'God of War has endured not just as a series, but also as a study of Greek tragedy. Upon the original games release, Sony struck gold with God of Wars delicious blend of brutal violence draped over an interesting world based on Greek mythology. Since then, gamers have seen Kratos slaughter his way through legendary gods and mortals with nary a sweat broken, and with him taking down the mac daddy of all Greek gods at the end of the third game, its only natural that Sony would explore Kratoss origin story to keep the series fresh. God of War: Ascension is the newest game in the franchise, and while its a bit of a step down from the original trilogy, it still manages to deliver a satisfying, if rather brief, experience.'
