Avoiderdragon: Gearbox Softwares star franchise (and one of the reasons why Aliens: Colonial Marines turned out bad) has made loot in first-person shooters quite cool, and it does a lot of things right even in the first game alone. But with the second game, it seems that not a lot of things changed, and it could be the same thing with this Pre-Sequel. However, this new one does add a bit to make it different from its predecessors.

Keith from The Outerhaven here and I admit it, I'm a huge fan of the Alien franchise. Sure I was a bit saddened with the released of Aliens: Colonial Marines and have given up hope for a proper Alien(s) game. That is until Sega announced that they were working on Aliens: Isolation. Fast forward to last week when we all finally got a chance to play the title and I have to say that this is perhaps the first title even to capture the essence from the first film.

Its been along time since the original Alien movie came out and Alien Isolation pays tribute to the Ridley Scott classic film. In 2012 Aliens Colonial Marines was released and disappointing millions of fans around the globe. This time around, this game sets itself to be more like the first Alien film rather than the second one. The player plays as Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen Ripley and is pitted against a single Xenomorph that relentlessly hunts the player throughout the entire game.

Palmer Sturman: Interstellar Marines is an early access title available on the Steam platform. Its being produced by a small team called Zero Point Software, based in Copenhagen. Its an indie title that refuses to be classified as such, theyre clearly aiming to emulate an AAA product. For a title thats been in development since late 2004 I cant help but feel like the gameplay is a bare-bones, even for an early access title. Sure, all the elements are there, but they really only exist at their most basic forms. Youve got your co-op which is a recently added feature, multiplayer, and even a single player campaign, but when it comes down to it the gameplay feels bland and there are countless other FPS titles that do it better. The textures are on par with the first F.E.A.R game (remember that?), and the outdoor effects remind me a lot of Nether: the graphics are pretty from a distance, but are still plain and they need a lot of work to bring more life to them. The franchise, thanks to its rich characters, and of course the killer alien, is perfect source material for an amazing video game experience, but unfortunately, at least up until now, no game developer has really been able to do the series justice in playable form, nor have any of the games ever recaptured the terror you may have experienced while watching the first Alien film. The disturbing trend of mediocre Alien games remained strong throughout history, with Alien: Colonial Marines almost cementing the fact that no game developer really had the keys to success for making a fantastic Alien video game experience. Luckily, in 2014 this trend has been killed off, and hopefully for good, thanks to Creative Assemblys brilliant take on the franchise with its multi-platform Alien: Isolation title.
