So Electronic Arts has shut down Maxis and, really, should we be surprised? Given EAs track record, its never truly shocking (though it IS always sad) to see it kill off one of its acquisitions.
Even so, theres more to EAs behavior than simply buying studios and snapping their necks. Theres a pattern of degradation at play as the Unicron of videogames strips its victims bare, and tosses out the husks.

TwoDashStash: "Maxis was founded in 1987 by Will Wright and Jeff Braun to publish SimCity, a game which struggled to garner interest from established publishers due to it lacking any defined win or loss conditions. Despite this, the game went on to become a massive hit with over a million sales worldwide. The success of the first SimCity game lead to multiple spinoff projects, including titles such as the obscure SimRefinery which was commissioned by Chevron and the more familiar SimTower."

According to vertexnormal, Maxis Emeryville was closed because the SimCity series was it suffered from The Sims huge success. And even though the older SimCity games made a profit, they were not even close to what The Sims had achieved."
