XBA: Its easy to be cynical about Minecraft: Story Mode. A Telltale adventure game set in the world of Mojangs all-conquering blockbuster, its a project that probably wouldnt have existed if Notch was still in charge. Minecraft isnt about narrative. Telltales taking on too many projects. And Microsofts first major creative decision as owners of the property is an odd one. What a dirty cash grab.

Out of all of its narrative endeavors, Telltale Games partnership with Minecraft seems the strangest fit. After all, Minecraft itself has no story, and grants players far more freedom and opportunities for self-expression than Telltale could ever hope to match. The folks at Telltale have proven time and time again, however, that they knows precisely how to approach each new IP they take on, and Minecraft: Story Mode shows all the signs of another great series.

Dont Starve has evolved greatly over the years, but at its core the tenants of a Burton/Lovecraft inspired survival game focusing on a punishing day/night cycle, crafting and exploration have not changed. This games presentation is unique, stark and permanently off putting. With angular character designs that are all elbows and jaw lines, music that is odd and twisted and a minimalist interface. It sets its tone, sticks to it and lets you wallow in a sense of isolation and desperation that are as alluring as they are disturbing. Conceived and created in during the boom of the survival game genre, Dont Starve couldnt feel more different to Minecraft and due to this it works as a wonderfully subversive piece of counter programming to the blocky, colourful, inviting world of Mojangs creation.
