15 RPGs That Truly Made the World a Better Place

Added: 11.03.2015 14:54 | 8 views | 0 comments

1. Mother 3

Not only an amazingly fun game, but also one of the most ambitious artistic statements the medium has ever produced. A personal vision that’s also a blast to play.

2. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn

Fans of Dragon Age need to jump on this for their next sword and sorcery fix. With several side-quests more fascinating than most games’ main campaigns, Baldur’s Gate II deserves its worldwide critical acclaim.

3. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

While Skyrim warrants a nod for convincing everyone and their neighbor to pour hundreds of hours into a medieval-fantasy game, Morrowind laid the groundwork for the open-ended, player-driven modern RPG. A revelation in its day.

4. Mass Effect 2

While technically light in its RPG mechanics, this second installment of BioWare’s space-opera epic excelled at creating dynamic relationships between you and your crew. For a story-driven genre, Mass Effect 2 turns the plot screws with exemplary skill.

5. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4

The game that ignited plenty of message board controversy also boasts a creepy murder story reminiscent of Videodrome. Fusing personas and maxing social links becomes a lovely lifestyle if you let it.

6. Planescape: Torment

In Planescape: Torment, you can join a death-worshipping cult, or even convince the final boss to off himself. You’ll also enjoy some of the most intriguing design elements to ever grace a video game, along with true freedom of choice.

7. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Easily the most important game based in the Star Wars universe, critics also frequently cite KOTOR as one of the finest games ever made. With a killer plot twist, and the ability to chart a yellow-eyed course toward the dark side, KOTOR has pure pazaak!

8. Fallout 2

If you like your games to have pitch black humor and nihilistic world views, Fallout 2 will feel like manna from heaven. While Fallout 3 and New Vegas gained huge popularity, Fallout 2 is the series’ apex.

9. Xenoblade Chronicles

After the convoluted story bloat of the previous Xeno- titles, Xenoblade wowed everyone with its fresh take on JRPG systems and a gigantic, gorgeous world to explore. It took an internet fan campaign to release it, but it was worth all the effort.

10. Dragon Quest III

The notorious game that led to mass truancy arrests of Japanese schoolchildren also serves as the bedrock for the franchise that brought us spells, slayers and slimes. If you pray diligently to the goddess, we may finally get DQ VII on the 3DS.

11. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

All of Nintendo’s charm and inventive scene setting flourish in this perfection of the Paper Mario formula. The best active battle system combined with the premiere of evil Princess Peach … what more could a Mario fan desire?

12. Skies of Arcadia

Whether you were building your own pirate base, or exploring the skies in a gigantic airship, Sega let you live the life of a swashbuckling steam punk with unprecedented charm and grace. What happened to our HD port?

13. Final Fantasy VI

It’s a tough split between FFVI and FFVII for the most important game in the storied series, but FFVI edges out a win with its pure craftsmanship and attention to detail. It’s also the pinnacle of the traditional JRPG form, sadly vanished to the winds of time.

14. Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar

A title everyone mentions as a touchstone, but few actually experience. If you value Role playing with a capital R, this game’s character development remains unparalleled. A largely unexplored branch in the RPG tree that still feels fresh today.

15. Chrono Trigger

It’s the Day of Lavos! Everyone gushes about this game, and rightfully so. It’s the perfect talent combo of Final Fantasy’s Sakaguchi and Dragon Quest’s Horii. The charming time travel elements and multiple endings earned it a permanent fixture on best of lists.

Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Fafnir Knight Announcement Trailer (HD)

Added: 11.03.2015 10:34 | 26 views | 0 comments

he next entry of the Etrian Odyssey Untold series is essentially two games in one — the first, a Nintendo 3DS update to Etrian Odyssey 2: Heroes of Lagaard (released on Nintendo DS) with new dungeon layouts, new graphics, and system improvements from the recent Etrian Odyssey Untold. The second is the Untold portion — a brand new story mode with a fixed party, voiced dialogue, and animated cutscenes that follows the bittersweet tale of the Fafnir Knight, Princess Arianna, Flavio— another hero of the Midgard Library— and the two adventurers, Bertrand and Chole. The five meet while exploring the Ginnugagap ruins, and then after the misfortune unfolds, they venture back and forth between the Yggdrasil Labyrinth and Ginnungagap, slowly working their way to discovering the origins of the Fafnir Knight. Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold is the seventh entry in the Etrian franchise and has a level of refinement that could only come from consumer feedback. Improved systems and mapping make Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold one of the most approachable Etrian titles to date. Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold has two ways to play the game, continuing the tradition of the Untold franchise. Classic mode revisits the original Etrian Odyssey 2 with updated graphics, player conveniences, and a full roster of classes. Story mode features a fixed party, but includes voiced dialogue, animated cutscenes and a bittersweet arc that explores the relationship between Arianna and the Fafnir Knight. Just as in Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl and Persona Q, in addition to normal difficulty, players can choose Picnic mode for a low-difficulty experience, or the veterans amongst them can choose Expert mode for a punishing play-through. Available Summer 2015 for Nintendo 3DS. Pre-order today: www.atlus.com/untold2

1. You’ll Create The Best Mario Level You’ve Ever Played

Nintendo’s inviting you to design your own Mario levels in the upcoming Mario Maker for Wii U. Just imagine: You can spell out the phrase “Suck it haters” with floating tiles of piranha plants.

2. Virtual Reality Hits the Mainstream

After years of buzz, the consumer model of the Oculus Rift will finally hit in 2015. The dawn of the techno dystopia has never seemed more appealing.

3. Fighting Games Rise From the Grave

Every few years someone declares the fighting genre dead, and then some awesome new game resurrects the scene once again. Street Fighter V and Mortal Kombat X arrive this year, and they both look vicious and absolutely vital.

4. Halo Gets Its Act Together

343 Industries shipped The Master Chief Collection with a host of bugs. But to give the devil his due, they weren’t the original developers for those games. Halo 5: Guardians is their baby, so here’s hoping they can deliver.

5. Zelda Finally Goes Open World

“Give us an open world like the first game!” That’s been the constant refrain of fans for the past two decades. This year, Nintendo aims to deliver with their most ambitious title yet. Finally, HD Zelda like you’ve always dreamed.

6. The Great JRPG Renaissance Begins

Where are all the new JRPGs? Well, between a new Xenoblade on the Wii U, and the desperately anticipated Persona 5, two heavy hitting franchises from Japan will release their most impressive entries yet. Relief is on the way!

7. Indie Games Continue to Innovate

Some of the biggest surprises each year come from the smaller studios that work tirelessly to deliver a personal vision. This year we’ll see Cuphead, Firewatch, The Witness, Inside, Hotline Miami 2, Adrift, and many more.

8. Media Molecule Has a Huge Surprise Up Its Sleeve

The company that brought us Little Big Planet and Tearaway has been working on a secret, unannounced game. Their PS4 tech demo showed promise back in 2013. Whatever they’re cooking up, we know it will be creatively unique.

9. Old Classics Will Become Easier to Play

Current offerings for retro games may be paltry, but signs point to more a robust selection throughout 2015. The Wii U recently launched downloads of Wii titles, and Sony’s PS Now will gain steam by year’s end.

10. Handheld Gaming Reaches Its Perfect Pinnacle

For the 3DS and the Vita, the later years in a console’s life usually sees the maturation of the system, along with its best games. Example A: Axiom Verge will absolutely (probably) kick ass.

11. Mirror’s Edge 2 Is Maybe Coming out

We’re getting a sequel to everyone’s favorite rebellious roof top runner! But it’s about more than just one great game. It’s emblematic that publishers are still willing to take risks on inventive experiences in 2015. Have Faith.

12. Two Brand New Nintendo IPs Excite Everyone

Just when you couldn’t stomach the idea of a 25th (!) Kirby game, Nintendo unveiled a pair of promisingly original games. The squad shooter Splatoon and the steampunk themed Code Name S.T.E.A.M. hit this year. Weird Nintendo is back!

13. The Variety of Voices in Games Has Grown More Diverse

While everyone loves to complain about the era of the YouTube Superstar, the medium can only benefit from a growing group of enthusiasts and archivists. Add Patreon and podcasts in the mix, and the culture of games is as lively as ever.
