Liam Lambert, GIZORAMA - "These days, Steam is awash with games intent on tapping in to Gen X retro nostalgia, and their over-abundance is enough to make anyone cynical about more rose-tinted 8-Bit platforming. Since it sells itself as a modern-retro platformer that pays homage to video gaming from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, I approached BiT Evolution with a decent amount of trepidation. Games within this niche rarely do a great deal for me, since my nostalgia-gland (yeah thats probably a thing) responds mainly to PS1/PS2/GameBoy Advance obscurities. How surprising, then, to discover that BiT Evolution is more than just a cynically designed, pretty-pixel-picture it is a smart, lovingly designed pastiche of old ideas which is more than happy to play around with new ideas."

TouchArcade: One of my most-played Steam games over the past year-and-a-half has been Nuclear Throne, Vlambeer's dual-stick shooter action-roguelike. It's challenging, has fantastic art, is highly replayable, and has no shot whatsoever of coming to mobile. The controls are a huge hindrance because there's aim-and-fire controls, and only a more deliberately-paced game like Space Marshals [$4.99] can pull that off. Plus, if control issues will keep Vlambeer from releasing Luftrausers on mobile, Nuclear Throne ain't happening. So, I find myself mostly wanting for a similar experience on mobile. While it's not quite on iOS yet, and it's a bit of a different game, Future Factory could just fill that void later this year.

Analog Addiction: "Lets all be honest for a moment: when you had first seen Triad Wars, you had thought its simply the missing multiplayer component of Sleeping Dogs; a way to cash-in on Square Enixs decision to save the True Crime franchise (although the publisher didnt purchase the actual intellectual property, opting instead to create a new one; hence, Sleeping Dogs), instead of working on a sequel. By the way, developer United Front Games and Square: people are still waiting for that tantalizing Sleeping Dogs 2. While Ive only experienced a few hours of the games closed beta (theres not much to do, at the moment), Im pleased to tell you Triad Wars has a lot of potential."

Chalgyr's Game Room: The Memory of Eldurim impresses as an action RPG title, but it serves as another very good example as well. While there have been plenty of stories about Early Access games going bad or drawing to a close prematurely, The Memory of Eldurim has so far shown the good that can come from the program as well.

Being developed by Two Tribes, the game initially began as an on-rails shooter for the Nintendo DS but has since evolved into a platforming action game. You control a robot which gains the ability to hack various devices and enemies through upgrades, and you must work your way through the levels by solving puzzles, defeating gargantuan bosses, navigating tricky platforming sections, and of course shooting swarms of enemies to remain alive."
