God of War III: Remastered Edition Review | Gamereactor UK

GR-UK writes: "Poor story beats aside, God of War III is still lavish in its offerings of engaging spectacle and extravagant excitement, and that's something that hasn't diminished in the intervening years between the original release and this Remastered version.
"However, this PS4 package is rather sparse, stingy even. You've got a Photo Mode, but little else. The 1080p, 60FPS upgrade is nothing to scoff at, given the PS3 version jumped between 30 and 60 constantly, but the game looks little different from how we remember - though the original is still impressive even today. That said, it doesn't compare to the quality of the GTAV and The Last of Us ports."

Jamie Briggs, Analog Addiction. "Kratos has finally made his debut on the PlayStation 4, in the form of God of War III Remastered. Unfortunately this isnt a new entry in the highly praised franchise; instead PlayStation 4 owners get to experience what I believe is the best entry in the long running series. God of War III Remastered isnt a drastic visual leap from its original release, nor does it bring many new features to the table to sweeten the deal, but it does provide a sound improvement over the original PlayStation 3 version, easily making it the best way to experience God of War III."

Adam Cook: "God of War will never be Shakespeare, but its a bloody good time that doesnt take the player for granted. Maybe thats why it was remastered, after all, then: to remind us of what games can be, if we just let them take us on a journey. A daft, angry, bald journey, led by a screaming topless Adonis that lets us kill everything that moves. Fair play, Sony."

Growing up weaned on the classic Harryhausen films like Clash of the Titans and Jason and the Argonauts, Id always had an interest in the tales of mans perpetual struggle against often callous and indifferent gods so both God of War III and its follow up Ascension scratched an itch that is hard to satiate with your usual generic modern FPS fare.

If you'll allow me to put on my old man hat for a moment, I remember a time when game developers would wait for a respectable interval before remaking a game. You could reasonably expect to see five or 10 years between a great game and its re-release, but with the advent of the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, that window has been shrinking.
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel? Dark Souls II? The Last of Us? I have food in my pantry that's older than these games, and yet they've already been gussied up for current-gen consoles, dragging full 1080p resolutions and 60 frames-per-second frame rates behind them, sometimes kicking and screaming in protest. And, of course, the games usually cost full price, even if you've bought them before.
Why is the games industry so enamored of HD remasters right now, particularly ones that add so little to a game's core experience? Furthermore, with widespread Xbox 360 backward compatibility on the way, are remasters doomed to go the way of the Virtual...
