Neil writes "You can always tell when something is going to be a little special just by the way it is slowly introduced. Forza has that in bucketloads and from the very first foray down the streets of Rio De Janerio in the cover star the 2017 Ford GT, youll be wowed by sights and sounds like very little else currently available on any console. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain successfully translates the iconic stealth action gameplay that has defined the series into a massive open world adventure.

The Phantom Pain makes a major departure from the gameplay of the earlier home console games, but its brilliant for it. The story loses its momentum half-way through and the boss fights can fall flat, but those are minor points compared to the outstanding open world that has been created for you to play in and the freedom to do so.

MNJ:
I am a huge fan of the Metal Gear series and desperately wanted to love Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain but I have to admit to being turned off by the whole affair. The first five hours of gameplay were great, exploring the open world and building Mother Base was thrilling, but after that, it grew tiresome and became a grind. Performance issues with the frame rate kept pulling me out of the moment and long lasting server issues mean I have been unable to play the multiplayer at all. I had hoped that Hideo Kojimas final Metal Gear game would wrap up the franchise nicely but instead we have a disjointed and unfinished plot. With only three real boss battles, most of the gameplay comes down to a formulaic method of approach, survey, shoot. And that just isnt Metal Gear to me. The franchise ends, not with a bang, but a whimper, and that might just be the saddest piece of gaming news I have ever heard.

| Mad Max MWEB GameZone Review - Falling Short of Greatness

MWEB GameZone writes: "Max is an angry man. The world around him is a dystopian nightmare (albeit one that could just possibly become a reality if humanity continues its own destructive ways) and he is a man out for vengeance.
But is the game any good?
Yes, Mad Max is a good game, but it could've been a great game. No wonder Max is mad."

So this is what happens when Hideo Kojima creates his own Swansong. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the successor to Prologue Ground Zeroes, taking place nine years after Motherbase is destroyed by a group of generally ugly/crazy gentlemen. TPP is a lot different to every other MGS game ever made though. NPU have played every game in the series, including the PSP titles, and can very boldly state, this is not like the rest. The few core control mechanics are there, hell the cardboard box is still here, but TPP is most definitely a whole new world as far as Snake is concerned. This pushes the boundaries, past invisible walls and a largely linear set of game areas, and drops you into Afghanistan, where the ten square kilometres are your oyster. It's also an extremely dense game.

TJ:
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is what so many big budget games try and fail to be. Densely packed but not padded with filler content, graphically beautiful yet sleek in its performance, and evocative of Hollywood blockbusters without misunderstanding both the mediums of movies and videogames.

People always try to downplay the story in Metal Gear Solid games. There's always a lot of hand-waving, a lot of 'yeah, it's bananas but...' that seems superficially like cultural cringe. Like the anime Shiki, which -- if you haven't watched it -- will seem like utter trash for the first three episodes until it becomes something awesome. And so you cringe as you recommend it, praying they make it past the Love Hina-esque bullshit and through to the good stuff lest they think you're one of those anime fans.

CGM:
When it comes to gameplay, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is undoubtedly the most polished and enjoyable entry in the series. Its a shame, however, that it entirely abandons the eccentricities, zaniness, and terrific storytelling that this franchise is known for. This doesnt feel like a Metal Gear game, but rather an entirely new project that series creator Hideo Kojima so obviously wanted to make. Its just simply called Metal Gear Solid.
