AOTF:
"Saints Row IV hasnt had a shortage of downloadable content since its 2013 release. How the Saints Saved Christmas and Enter the Dominatrix both launched as part of the Season Pass for the game. These wild, over-the-top additions have given players a reason to keep coming back to Saints Row, even though even the most ardent of fans wouldnt call them challenging, meaningful, or anything other than dumb fun. Gat out of Hell, a standalone expansion for Saints Row IV aims to be more of that with mixed results."

Ken McKown writes: The Saints Row franchise has come a long way. Starting off as a clone of another popular open-world crime simulator, the series has spun off into ridiculous directions, with each iteration raising the bar for insanity. Gat Out of Hell takes this one final step by tossing our protagonists into the underworld and adding the power everyone has been clamoring for: flight. Even with minimal upgrades this $20 stand-alone expansion packs enough punch to drag me back into the world one last time before we get a proper upgrade to the new consoles.

IGN:
"Where some games portray Hell as a place of eternal torment, Saints Row IV: Gat Out of Hells vision of the Inferno is almost as mundane and silly as its surface world, and a little more fun to explore. A neon-drenched (but decidedly last-gen-looking) new city about half the size of SR4's Steelport, it's filled with undead "husks" shambling around and driving hideous junkers, all under the watchful eyes of buff guardian demons. It features depressing-looking businesses (quick, who wants to visit the Sad Cans strip club?) and distinct landmarks (like a Ferris wheel built to drown its riders), all surrounded by a jagged-rock-and-molten-lava motif. It's also where the President that is, your protagonist from Saints Row IV has been kidnapped by Satan himself, thus setting the stage for Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell, a short and entertaining (but strangely paced) standalone expansion."

Saints Row IV is now the latest game to get the HD-remaster treatment, bringing its distinctive brand of absurd, self-conscious, violent comedy to the current generation of consoles. Its never been a top tier, AAA series, but its managed to carve out a place for itself in a genre that is largely about being dark and broody. So, at $30, is it worth it? For people that have never played it, absolutely. For fans, maybe not.
