Sanctum 2, the sequel to the 2011 game, blends the two genres of First Person Shooter and Tower Defense. The most immediate aspect that I noticed whilst playing this title was that it doesnt sway towards one of the two genres more, instead bringing something completely balanced to the table.

The Escapist: "Sanctum 2 is a thrilling, fast-paced tower defense game, which keeps things interesting with the FPS gameplay during the assaults. The RPG elements add to the total package, making even the single player feel like a complete experience."

Rock, Paper, Shotgun: "Sanctum 2 is probably best played with friends, and I think its going to have a wide of audience of friends enjoying it. It does feel like a bit of an awkward sort of sequel, though. It has changed significantly, but doesnt really feel like a giant leap in any particular direction. Rather, the design has taken a stroll from the original template, making the scope wider without really uncovering any new terrain. Thats not to say you wont enjoy it its a decent game but rather to say that this feels like a holding pattern for the developer, rather than an ambitious step up. Ill be keen to see what they do next."

Thomas Hellier of Capsule Computers writes:
"In the crowded FPS and Tower Defence markets, it can be hard to stand out. Sanctum 2 manages this feat simply by being a clever mix of the two with tonnes of polish."

Drew Leachman writes: Tower defense meets first-person shooter. We have seen the formula before in the original Sanctum. It was an enjoyable experience, but also felt somewhat bare-bones. It did some great things and now Coffee Stain Studios hopes to capitalize on the mechanics to make an even better experience with Sanctum 2. For the most part, they do a good job at improving on the already proven formula.

| Destructoid- Review: Sanctum 2

DT:As a whole, Sanctum 2 feels confused. It isn't quite as much tower defense as fans of the first game would probably hope for, since more of the emphasis this time around is placed on the first-person shooting element. It also hides way too much information from the player, leading to a lot of guess-and-check strategies. The game remains a refreshing hybrid of genres, however, and many of the frustrations temporarily wash away as you lay witness to the last enemy in the last wave die, proving that your strategic planning and accurate shooting have paid off.

BT writes: Every time I look at the differences in Sanctum 2 to Sanctum, I see major parallels to modern role-playing games and its superior sequel: The first was a bold step into the deep pool of the unknown, and the second step could walk on water and rise above the other dazzlingly. Sanctum 2 trims the fat off the original, forgoing the perfect trap and having no real penchant for immediate danger, and saturates the meat that remains with a healthy dose of what this game needs: a serving of risk management with a side of action. With replayability high and a season pass already active on its Steam store page, I expect (probably too) much from this title, its post release content, and its sequel.
