| We Happy Few Gamescom 2015 Hands-on Preview | Power Up Gaming

Scott Russell writes: "We Happy Few had piqued my interest ever since its inaugural art on Kickstarter; an image of a startlingly vacant masked woman. I was then excited to see a new, creepy trailer debuting at Microsofts Gamescom conference on Tuesday. Looking for its demo booth on the show floor, I found it tucked below the Microsoft Live stage, a rather understated location for a game that seemed to have so much potential. It turned out that my confidence in its procedurally generated gameplay, and rural dystopian aesthetic, was completely justified."

| Gamescom 2015: Fallout 4 is a Bigger, Better Fallout 3
Added: 10.08.2015 13:18 | 3 views | 0 comments
Scott Russell writes: "Fallout 4s behind closed doors demo at Gamescom this week hit me, not unexpectedly, with the bug for more. It looked like a prettier Fallout 3 with a greater focus on environmental details, more popping colours and a retooled skill system, but essentially, the presentation shown displayed a series of gameplay vignettes that were typical of the post-apocalyptic series. And that was perfectly fine."

| A musicologist's look at 'Final Fantasy VI'

Classical MPR: "I met Ryan Thompson shortly after Top Score began in 2011. At the time, Ryan lived in the Twin Cities. He's a PhD candidate in musicology at the University of Minnesota, with a special interest in ludomusicology.
If you're unaware what that last word means, you're not alone. Ludomusicology is a growing field in which musicologists study the impact of music in video games. When I first met Ryan, he'd been working on a paper about the opera scene in Final Fantasy VI.
Final Fantasy VI came out in 1994, and I was not a gamer in 1994. I had no idea the opera existed until I met Ryan. I invited him to come to the studios here at MPR to talk about the unusual musical event (for a video game), and learned a great deal about how the opera mirrors the plot of the entire game."

Scott Russell writes: "During Gamescom this week, I had an opportunity to speak, in a lengthy conversation, with the CEO of Image and Form Games, the creators behind the mechanical, and much lauded, Steamworld Dig. The all-round pleasant gentleman, Brjánn Sigurgeirsson and I discussed the composition of the Steamworld universe, the current state of Nintendo and beyond, the ethos of fun in games and far tellectually stimulating subjects: Eurovision."
