Styx: Master of Shadows Review

Added: 07.10.2014 17:00 | 2 views | 0 comments

You're hugging the corner of the wall, watching the two guards walk toward you as you remain hidden under a cloak of darkness. As they walk past a chest, your trap is sprung and one of them is killed. Without hesitation, you throw a knife at the one remaining guard, killing him before he can raise an alarm. Everything is going according to plan, so you attempt to leap up off the balcony to another platform, but the stilted way in which you jump makes you fall short of your goal. You fall to the ground, alerting a couple of guards. You time your parries in an attempt to duel with one, but the other shoots you with a crossbow and you die instantly.

Such is the experience of playing Styx: Master of Shadows, a stealth game that occasionally hits the right notes before making you forget about them thanks to bad AI, sub-par combat, repetitious environments, and occasionally frustrating controls.

At least Styx has that "rugged handsomeness" thing going for him.

The plot of Styx serves as something of a prequel to another Focus Home Interactive game, games. That prospect may sound exciting, but Styx unfortunately finds itself in the shadows of better stealth experiences.

Its been a tough time for newly released stealth games as of late. Youll be hard pressed to read reviews that dont compare these games to Assassins Creed, or at least pick out specific elements and abruptly state Assassins Creed already did it. Which is why I was pleased to find that Styx: Master of Shadows had a few tricks up its sleeve that hadnt yet been thoroughly overdone.

The new Unreal Engine will bring eerily realistic skin and shadows to your games

"It hasn't been hard to produce realistic-looking skin in computer-generated movies, but it's much harder to do that in the context of a game running live on your console or PC. That trip to the uncanny valley is going to be much easier in the near future, though, thanks to the impending arrival of Unreal Engine 4.5." The new update will add a new approach for Screen-space Subsurface Scattering using the technic presented a year ago by Jorge Jimenez: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6R6N4Vy0nEfeature=player_embedded#! It will also add Ray Traced Distance Field Soft Shadows for more accurate glitch-free shadows and now Mobile games can handle dynamic shadows for movable directional lights.

Styx: Master of Shadows Review | Hardcore Gamer

Styx: Master of Shadows is as pure a stealth game as they come. It forces you to be thoughtful and to observe, and rewards your patience with a satisfying tension. The abilities Styx has at his disposal are all great fun to use, and the levels are designed in such a way as to encourage experimentation and creativity. Ghosting through a level is exhilarating in ways few recent games can match, and Styx brings a substantially better story to the table than most of its contemporaries. Despite a few rough edges, Styx: Master of Shadows deserves a place alongside Metal Gear Solid 3, Hitman: Blood Money, and Mark of the Ninja as one of the best titles the genre has to offer.

Styx: Master of Shadows is a surprisingly good stealth game from Cyanide Studio. It captures the same feel as some of the best stealth games out there, and while it may not be groundbreaking, it does have a few tricks up its sleeve that make it a valuable addition to the stealth genre.
