After seeing its fair share of pre release controversy, the series that hasn't been afraid to get people talking is back. Dead Island Riptide looks to reignite the open world zombie RPG genre once again, a mere 18 months after the first game was released that divided audiences after one of the most memorable game trailers of recent years. So now that the talk is over and the game is finally here was it worth the trouble? Techland returns with a solid effort that feels like more of the same than anything truly different like the previous game.

Did Techland call the bounty hunting hero of Call of Juarez: Gunslinger Silas Greaves because his surname sounds a bit like graves? That seems unlikely, but it sure was helpful for the songwriter behind the tune in the games latest trailer and new shots.

Redding writes:
Despite such sloppiness as well as plotting that's ridiculous even by zombie-story standards "Riptide" is amusing in spurts, especially if you can gather an online posse to deal with the hungry hordes. Still, I wish Techland had spent some time addressing the series' problems rather than just shoveling out more of the same.

BeefJack writes:
What strikes me most about Riptide is the untapped potential that remains, and how little of it Techland have sourced. This second entry in the Dead Island franchise is unforgivably ramshackle, beset by a host of galling bugs and an uninspiring tale of human survival. More than anything though, in a climate in which Borderlands 2, Left 4 Dead, Far Cry 3 and The Walking Dead are all fondly remembered, its bewildering just how little has improved over the course of nearly two years. One to save for a lazy weekend.

Liam Pritchard of Brash Games writes "Riptide may not be much of a departure from the original, but its certainly a sequel that plays to the series strengths. Sure, Techland could have been a bit more ambitious second time around, but for those looking for more of the same, Riptide certainly delivers in spades".
