Dealspwn.com writes: "Techland have effectively released a large expansion pack that offers a practically identical gameplay experience; another island full of shambling monstrosities to clumsily brutalise with home-made weaponry and fetch quests a go-go. Can Dead Island impress now that (as B.B. King once famously sang) the thrill is gone?
Not really."

Even though I have these gripes with the game, Dead Island Riptide had me hooked again. I love the open world gameplay, the weird but ironically charming characters and the first person zombie slashing, using the weapons I crafted or got from beating a massive zombie berserker. Techland has managed to rope me back in and take a deep dive into a beautiful zombie infested tropical island that I couldnt stop looting. If you loved Dead Island then Riptide is a game you will want to jump into as it feels just as fun, addicting and rewarding as its predecessor.

Once bitten, twice shy?
It’s been described as a spin-off of the first game, which is a good call on the part
of Techland and Deep Silver because if they called it a sequel they’d have been
taking the piss. Riptide is basically the first game in a different location; as before,
the survivors of a zombie apocalypse band together to explore their environment,
looting and shooting their way to a potential escape. Dead Island’s notional appeal
is in sauntering around a paradise-gone-awry - the juxtaposition of idyllic setting
and total horror clashing - while thwacking your way past legions of the undead...

Call for digital distribution was the right move.
If you wrote off Call of Juarez: Gunslinger by the franchise legacy alone, no one would blame you. After a mildly positive reception for Bound in Blood, the folks at Techland gave a modern day Western a shot with The Cartel. Big mistake. It wasn't enough for Ubisoft to let go of the franchise, but rather than a retail release that could spell major financial risk with low reward, Techland reloaded their six-shooters and took aim at digital distribution.
The result is a game that takes itself a lot less seriously and appeals more to the fans of old coin-op Wild West shoot-'em-ups of yesteryear. There's still a story and campaign, loosely based on historic outlaws, such as Jesse James or Billy the Kid. But there's also a strictly arcade mode meant for wracking up high scores and just having a blast. Or both.
