Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers developers The Behemoth are back after a five year absence with their third Xbox Live Arcade Title, BattleBlock Theater.
The game stars a group of friends shipwrecked on a mysterious island, captured by the local inhabitants and forced by their former best friend to one and all Hatty Hattington, to participate in deadly performances for the amusement of an army of technologically advanced cats its an absurdly entertaining story arc, encapsulating a high energy platform-puzzle game that had me laughing from the very first cutscene.

Polygon: "With well-implemented platforming mechanics that hold up across game modes and intelligently designed levels that always offer challenge and reward ambition, BattleBlock Theater is a great genre-bending 2D experiment. Taking an elaborate collection of blocks and engineered something special with it, The Behemoth has created a player experience far more sophisticated than the goofy theme belies."

EGM: "Between taking in the hysterical story, trying your hand at level creation, or just blowing up some buddies in versus mode, most every gamer will find something to love about BattleBlock Theater. Whether played alone or with friends, The Behemoths latest is an absolute blast thats well worth the price of admission."

OXM UK: "Generous almost to excess, Battleblock Theater is one of Xbox Live Arcade's masterworks, and a reminder that genuine, bona fide imagination is possible even in the twilight of a console generation."

Destructoid: "If you absolutely positively hate platformers, I'm not so sure you'll enjoy BattleBlock Theater. Unlike Castle Crashers which had the benefit of the simplistic, pick up and play beat 'em up genre, you get more out of BattleBlock the more you're willing to put into it. Positive reinforcement is gained through skill and triumph rather than simply bashing things in mindlessly, so in that regard, the universal appeal is a bit lower than most of Behemoth's older titles.
But as long as you're willing to give it a chance, you'll reap the rewards of a fairly deep, interesting game that was built with a lot of heart. I can't wait to see how Behemoth follows this up, and I hope it doesn't take five years to do it."

The makers of Castle Crashers put in a long overdue encore.
"Thinking outside the box" is something developers say a lot, but all too often in these recession-hit, creatively moribund times, the phrase translates to "new AI behaviours" or "Horde Mode 3.5". Enter Battleblock Theater, a deeply macabre and triumphant 2D platformer from Castle Crashers developer The Behemoth which does, in fact, think outside the box, despite being made almost entirely of the things.
