Titan Souls review: the loop | Polygon

Polygon: I'm on the final boss of Titan Souls, and I'm ready to throw my controller across the room. I've died what I estimate to be about 30 times in this particular fight in developer Acid Nerve's overhead, pixel-art action game, which is really just a small fraction of the total number of times I've died over the course of the game, but I just don't feel like I'm getting anywhere. I know what I need to do, where I should theoretically be aiming my single arrow. But that doesn't seem to matter, and here comes death number 31

Titan Souls review (PC): Challenging action game sees you die and die again | Digital Spy

DS: If you're going to crib, you might as well crib from the best - this is something Titan Souls has taken to heart. Not at all related to From Software's acclaimed Souls series, this began life as a game jam mini-project and immediately got everyone excited. We had to wait a few years for it to come out, but the wait has been worth it; it's not the longest game, it's certainly not going to enamour any and all, but those who fall for it are going to fall hard.

TSA: Titan Souls might not be related to From Softwares Souls series in any way beyond a striking similarity in its name, but it does manage to live up to some of the inevitable parallels that are conjured up in your mind. This is a brutally difficult game, where you must learn through trial and error just what it is that you must do in order to succeed, and then successfully act out your plan of attack.

PCGamer: In an interview, the director of Dark Souls Hidetaka Miyazaki once referred to a games health bar as the characters will to live. The lower the bar, the more determined and desperate a player will become to stay alive in those split seconds. Anyone who has played Miyazakis masterpiece knows this feeling all too wellyouve been flattened by some horrible boss, you cant just cure because youll be killed instantly, so youve just got to get in that one pixel perfect dodge on the enemies next attack and youll have a window to cure yourself. Time to test your nerve!

DTOID: I've always clamored for the all-boss-fights game. Shadow of the Colossus, an inescapable inspiration here, did it right and others have done it wrong, like Prince of Persia (2008), but I love the idea of removing fluff encounters. A JRPG that was all boss fights and no grinding could actually make for strategic battle. Strategy RPGs that don't allow for excessive grinding, like XCOM, are essentially "all boss fights."

GI Developer Acid Nerve recognizes the appeal of a good boss fight, and they've combined the essence of the incredible games I mentioned into a unique package that trims the fat and focuses on big confrontations. More than just a tribute to either game, the studio infuses the core concept of hunting down giant ancient beasts from Shadow of the Colossus with enticing elements like extreme lethality, top-down Zelda-inspired battles, and a captivating sense of mystery.

Titan Souls Review | Gamespot

Gamespot: "Titan Souls is a game of contradictions. It's difficult until it isn't. It's compelling until it isn't. And it's fun until it isn't, which fortunately the game understands, drawing to a close after four hours or so when the triumphs no longer outweigh the aggravations. It is the subject of difficulty that makes Titan Souls so unusual, however."
