Metro: Gran Turismo and Forza have a new rival, but does this crowd-funded driving sim have enough horsepower to keep up with the pack? Of all the many genres of video games its racing sims that are the hardest to make seem unique. Thats one reason why theres been so relatively few of them in recent years, as the business of looking photorealistic becomes increasingly trivial but the difficulty of giving each game its own unique features becomes ever greater. But Project CARS really does feel like its doing something new, and although its a serious racer its really nothing like Gran Turismo or Forza.

It's been a long time since we've seen a dedicated racing simulator with a large budget. You may be wondering what I mean by that when it's been less than two years since Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport pushed out a release. To put it simply, these series might be labeled as racing simulators, but they've been missing key ingredients that would earn them the respect of racing sim fans.

GI: Until now, Slightly Mad Studios' identity has been largely wrapped up in other brands predominantly EA's Need for Speed franchise. The developer has made other racing titles since it last worked on NFS: Shift in 2011, but Project Cars feels like a definitive statement of identity. The game joins a sim-racing field alongside already-established competitors like Gran Turismo and Forza, but it also does things its own way, challenging the ways of the past. Project Cars doesn't radically change the genre, but longtime enthusiasts should take heed of this new franchise.
