AOTF: Turtle Rock Studios, creators of one of the best new games of the last-generation in the original Left 4 Dead, has another ambitious project on their hands with Evolve. Call it want you want, but popular consensus on the multiplayer in Left 4 Dead is that it was pretty amazing. Four player controlled zombies with special abilities and a army of angry common infected versus four humans looking for a way to the next safe house Left 4 Dead had some very interesting mechanics to the competitive gameplay. For all that it did right, it always made players work together on both sides of the table. Evolve doesnt quite take Left 4 Dead to the next level, but its a game that focuses on the same kinds of teamwork.

Evolve Review | XBA

XBA: In the run-up to Evolves launch, discussion surrounding Turtle Rocks 4v1 competitive/co-operative shooter largely focused on whether players would still be interested a month after release. Will there be enough variation to keep players involved? Will it be too repetitive? Will it be balanced? Those were the questions. After a few days trudging around Evolves maps Im decently placed to attempt some answers. Evolve is staggeringly ambitious. When those of us who write about games say that kind of thing, its usually in relation to size and scope. GTA V - that was an ambitious game. Skyrim was pretty ambitious too. But Evolve is ambitious in a different way. Pitting a team of four Hunters from a range of hugely different classes up against a single monster from a selection of three or four, on a smattering of maps across a handful of modes; all while allowing bots to fill any gaps left by human players it leads to so many variables its dizzying.

Vince Ingenito: Where a lot of high-concept games start with big promises and end in scaled back disappointment, Evolve achieves exactly what it set out to do. Through an array of intelligent design choices, developer Turtle Rock Studios has created a smart, asymmetric, multiplayer monster-hunting game that plays unlike anything else. Its tactically deep, bursting with character, and once you get past its mildly obtrusive progression system, it offers a level of nuance rarely found in multiplayer shooters.

Evolve review | EGM

EGM: Silly though it may be to parade around pre-release awards as some kind of indicative acclaim, all those laurel wreaths on the back of Evolves box and in its trailers are there for a reason. Rather than upholding the multiplayer status quo, Turtle Rock Studios first big game in nearly seven years sought to bring a fresh perspective to shooters, with an asymmetrical showdown between four hunters and a lone monster on a remote and dangerous sci-fi world. The concept was immediately appealingthats where those awards come inbut the main concern was whether or not Evolve could deliver a complete and engaging game around it. In an effort to give all five reviewers a chance to fully discuss their opinions, weve put together a special Review Crew podcast that touches on every aspect of Evolve at length. Beneath that, youll find each editors detailed conclusions on their own class and how the experience impacted their opinion of the game as a whole.

GI Turtle Rock's multiplayer monster-hunting shooter releases tomorrow, but the game only comes packed with three monsters. That's great for the first few months, but fans are eventually going to want to start hunting some more exotic game. Here's our list of dream monsters we'd like to see included as Evolve DLC. Sure, some of these would require some fancy licensing footwork, but dreaming is free.
