SN:Last year's XCOM: Enemy Unknown was a critical darling, redefining how a turn-based strategy game can look and play. A year later, Firaxis returns with a new Civilization-style expansion pack dubbed Enemy Within. Featuring the same aliens-are-attacking story as the original, this expansion remixes new missions and enemies into an already-existing framework. Its about the "how" and not the "what" as Enemy Within leans on substance to make its case.

Escapist:The temptation to just keep throwing more "stuff" into a strategy game can be very strong. More options! More maps! More items! It's better because it's more, you see? Firaxis scored a modest hit by revamping the old XCOM franchise with Enemy Unknown last year and, like many modest hits, publisher 2K was keen to keep revenue flowing with an expansion. Thankfully, the team at Firaxis didn't just toss the kitchen sink into the elegant balance between base-building strategy and turn-based tactics, but gave the player significant choices to make in Enemy Within. All of the fun new toys, however, do work a bit against the game's biggest flaw - after a certain point of advancement, the challenge and satisfaction of snuffing aliens dissipates quickly.

GS:Several hours into XCOM: Enemy Within, pumping bullets into extraterrestrials and sending aircraft to chase UFOs, I found myself thinking of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. Rest assured, there are no dragons here, but Firaxis' beloved tactical shooter follows much the same model as Capcom's role-playing game in offering what some may call an "ultimate" edition of 2012's turn-based strategy hit. In this latest jaunt, hours filled with the same cutscenes of Dr. Vahlen and Dr. Chen bickering over the same priorities rush by. The enemy is known now, at least for those of us who played XCOM: Enemy Unknown before, and thus some of the mystery has passed away. But as I ventured deeper into alien bases and terrorist cells, I found myself thinking of XCOM: Enemy Within more as an alternate reality. It's an approach that makes facing the alien menace exciting all over again.

From Strategyinformer.com: "Someone once said, Its not the destination that matters, its the journey. In many ways he was right, but then he was ripped apart by a Chryssilid so it doesnt really matter anymore. When playing through XCOM: Enemy Within, the expansion for last years surprise hit tactical strategy game, its worth bearing that in mind. Sadly, and I want to get this out of the way now, the game ends exactly the same as it does in the original release. In fact, the last hour of the game is still the weakest, as things start winding down and you prepare for that naff final mission. But it really is the journey that matters most, and Enemy Within makes it, once again, a fantastic journey to partake in.".

Machinima - "I initially had some trouble wrapping my mind around what an expansion to XCOM: Enemy Unknown would amount to. Turns out its very similar to an expansion for Civilization: new mechanics, units, and custom content refresh the original experience. In Enemy Within, you play the same campaign as Enemy Unknown, only with lots of additions that change the feel of the game rather dramatically."

2K has put a couple of its iOS strategy titles on sale. So, yes, it's cut the price of XCOM: Enemy Unknown in half, and chopped a big chunk off the cost of Civilization Revolution.
Civilization Revolution will set you back just 69p / 99c now. And while we weren't impressed with the iPhone version [buy], the iPad version [buy] is an improvement over its little brother thanks to its less fiddly c...
