The rebirth of the cult classic X-Com series with last years XCOM: Enemy Unknown was well received by critics and consumers alike, with the gameplay proving that console strategy was far from dead and 2K Games backing the product confidently enough to see it making an impact at retail. The recently launched The Bureau: XCOM Declassified has shown that this is a franchise that has room to grow, but the reveal of XCOM: Enemy Within proved that its not all about direct shooting action.

By avoiderdragon:The good thing about turn-based games is that theyre fairly easy to learn how to play, but also gives players time to plan out their moves. That makes this genre good for both casual and hardcore fans, which is why even mobile platforms are inundated by turn-based titles. For instance, X-COM: Enemy Unknown that was originally for the PC and consoles was released for the iOS to much fanfare, and it worked brilliantly. Heres another one for mobiles, but its also not the usual turn-based fare.

| OtakuDome: Preview of Sony's Upcoming Rain

Otaku Dome's preview of Rain:
Yesterday we received a copy of Rain from Sony, and after spending a few hours with it I was absolutely amazed. Fear, Sound, Sight, and Music, thats how Rain works, and it uses these elements beautifully.
When you first play Rain things start off innocently enough, boy meets girl, girl meets boy, boy tries to find girl. After the opening scene however, things get dark very quickly. From the moment you encounter the Unknown for the first time you forget that this game is meant to be played by basically anyone.

Firaxiss excellent XCOM: Enemy Unknown proved that gamers were ready and willing to play strategy-focused X-COM games. When 2K Marin unveiled its final iteration, my expectations for the game increased exponentially. The Bureau: XCOM Declassified appeared to blend fast-paced shooting and strategic squad commands to create something that could stand alongside the strategy games, and while some of its ideas still shine, the final product doesnt come close to reaching its potential.

It never bodes well when the President of the company currently developing an updated version of the classic strategy game series X-COM publicly states that strategy games are just not contemporary. This belied the original intention and goes someway to explaining how The Bureau: XCOM Declassified has been in development since 2006 and was originally announced - in a very different form to that which it ended up - in 2010. What 2K Games have ultimately delivered is a third-person tactical shooter, adding to the XCOM universe as support to the fantastic XCOM: Enemy Unknown which was released in 2012 to critical and fan acclaim alike, despite it being one of those non-contemporary strategy games.
