Volition producer says Guerrilla and Armageddon "lost quite a bit" of money for publisher THQ.
The latest Red Faction games were financial failures for publisher THQ. That's according to Volition senior producer Jim Boone, who told "lost quite a bit" of money.
Deep Silver parent company Koch Media , but the Red Faction franchise was not part of the deal. Boone said this was hardly surprising, given the shortcomings of Guerrilla and Armageddon.
"And when we lost as much money as we did with [Red Faction: Guerrilla] and when we lost as much money as we did with [Red Faction: Armageddon] I think you know, in our hearts we certainly love Red Faction, but at the same time it's kind of hard to look at that business and think, you know gosh, how come we didn't get that too."
Following .
"Given that the title now in two successive versions has just found a niche, we do not intend to carry forward with that franchise in any meaningful way," Farrell said at the time.
Though the Red Faction series received no bidders during the THQ auction this year, the company is still trying to offload the franchise. The publisher said in February that it has received . THQ expects the bidding and sale process for Red Faction, along with the Darksiders, Homeworld, and Destroy All Humans!, to be finalized by mid-May.

"The difference is we make money," jokes Dead Island publisher's COO.
"We're a small, guerilla tactics company," Deep Silver's COO Geoff Mulligan told Game Informer in an interview published in the magazine. "People say, 'Oh, you acquired Volition and Metro, you're going to be a triple-A publisher. What separates us from a triple-A publisher is that I don't really have a desire to be a triple-A publisher.
"I actually think we're much better than the Activisions, EAs, and Ubisofts of the world. People say, 'What do you mean? They are valued at three billion dollars.' I say the difference is that we make money. [Laughs]"

| News: Saints Row 4 could release on PS4 next-gen Xbox 'eventually'

But focus remains on current-gen consoles and PC.
Talking to VG247, design director Scott Phillips explained that Volition "[didn't] like to work on platforms" that may not be available in time for the game's August release date, hence the focus on current-gen and PC.
But even though a next-gen release isn't part of Volition's plan "right now", Saints Row 4 "could come out on [next-gen] eventually," Phillips adds.
Phillips' comments conflict with those of senior producer Jim Boone, who told us last month that, though the studio is "looking at next-gen" for future projects, Saints Row 4 will only see a release on Xbox...

Matt Randisi writes, "The Saints Row series has always served as a comfortable staple in the gaming community as a franchise built to satisfy our innate need for catharsis. Volition likes it that way, and their goal with every installment isnt how do we capture the industrys hearts and win all the important awards? but how to we make our game even crazier!? You know what? We love them for it. We know they love us too, and the first-hand look we got at Saints Row IV at this years PAX East is irrefutable proof of that. Lets have a look at what exactly is pushing the Saints way over the top in their latest venture."

Whenever a developer says they are ambitiously pushing the envelope with their next title (specifically in regard to sequels), I either shrug or roll my eyes. It is such a common term that it almost never registers with me. Not that I hold it against any developer that utilizes such a vernacular; no one wants to give the impression that they are producing the same product they put out a year or two ago.
After doing this whole writing-about-video games thing for over a year now, I can say that its possible to be fooled by previews. It has happened before, and it could likely happen again. At this years PAX East, Volition and their new publisher, Deep Silver, managed to shove that apprehension down my throat (for now, at least).

| Gi - Saints Row 4 Preview

Gi - When most players began compiling their lists of most anticipated games of 2013, Saints Row 4 was barely an afterthought. There had been word last year that a new Saints Row would be coming in 2013, but any information on the project was kept so tightly under wraps that the gaming community was beginning to forget about its existence completely. Despite THQs demise earlier this year, Volition had been moving forward with Saints Row 4 and is already putting the final touches on the game.

"Following up an incredibly successful title is hard enough as it is without added intangibles. But Volition have had the added stress of having to deal with THQ, their former publisher, falling apart before their eyes and being sold to Deep Silver. One could only wonder if the troubles would have bubbled over to the development of Saints Row 4. They say it hasnt and by the looks of it they are telling the truth as Saints Row 4 looks exponentially sane than its predecessor.
Saints Row 4 will see the leader of the Saints as the President of the United States. It will also see aliens, crazy weaponry and super powers. Simply put, if Saints Row: The Third did not convince you that it was no longer just a GTA clone, Saints Row 4 will."
