Nintendo's announcement last night of the delay of Star Fox Zero to Q1 2016 is not without precedent. Recall that in 2013, Super Mario 3D World was moved up to the November slot as Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was moved to December, then February 2014. And it worked out pretty well critically, even if the sales weren't as strong as they could've been. But Tropical Freeze was held back because it was Nintendo's retail lineup for the Wii U in the first quarter of 2014; Star Fox Zero is being delayed for quality concerns.

NL: While it may be too early to start digging a grave for the Wii U and ordering the headstone, the console is undoubtedly reaching the end of its commercial lifespan and the delay of Star Fox Zero is a massive blow to its chances of making it into a few more thousand homes this Christmas. Not that Nintendo is letting such concerns trouble it unduly - the company's gaze has passed beyond its current hardware and is fixed squarely on the future, a future in which it can hopefully return to the forefront of the games industry from both a critical and commercial perspective.

Star Fox Zero was supposed to be the big holiday game this year for Nintendo Wii U owners, but due to a desire to deliver the highest quality possible, Miyamoto and his team delayed the game into early 2016. Its not all bad, though, and there are still some great titles on the Wii U with more on the way.
