Before producer Doug Heder arrived to tell me about LEGO Dimensions' Adventure Worlds, the Warner Bros. Interactive rep was telling me about some of the game's Doctor Who features; particularly that your onscreen Doctor can be changed to any of the prior Doctors. However, if he dies, when he pops back up in regular LEGO fashion, he will "regenerate" as the next Doctor in the sequence.
Even when surrounded by the onslaught of indie games at PAX Prime 2015, Lords of New York is the most indie of them all. Where the indie genre is becoming slowly saturated with roguelike, procedurally-generated actions titles inspired by the Souls series (not a bad thing really, but a very noticeable trend), Lords of New York is a poker RPG... set in the Prohibition era... with a narrative that's based on the mafia and transforms depending on your choices with the morality system. The concept alone may just the most niche, most innovating thing I've ever heard in a long time. And you'd be hard pressed to find another game that's as far outside the box than this is.
PAX Prime's booths and displays are almost as ostentatious as those at E3, sometimes better. With the consumer focus of the show, it attracts amazing cosplayers of all sorts as well. Here are some photos of notable displays and PAX experiences.
At PAX Prime 2015, Final Fantasy XV Director Hajime Tabata said once again that his RPG's release date will fall within 2016. A special event will be held in March to reveal the specific date.
That sound was just snapping twigs underfoot, right?
Microsoft's Xbox Indie event at PAX offered a number of opportunities to see games the console maker and publisher is excited to show for its indie platform. Through the Woods is a walking simulator/horror game based on Norwegian folklore in which a young mother searches for her son who has been abducted by a creature, which you track in a forest at night.
Ever since the glory days of Battlefield: Bad Company 2, PC gamers have been at odds with the semi-annual, primarily console-based shooter that is Call of Duty, and Black Ops III seems to be no exception.
Puzzle games don't have to reinvent the wheel to succeed, but a creative mechanic goes a long way. Case in point: Mushroom 11. One look and it appears to be a game in which the player controls a giant blob organism and pushes it along with the mouse. There's only a small bit of truth to that premise, and my hands-on time with Mushroom 11 at
At first glance, the mere concept of a Telltale adventure in a Minecraft world, which emphasizes player freedom and is devoid of voice-acting, might seem like a stretch in terms of narrative and dialogue choice. But similar criticisms could have been lobbed at The Lego Movie, yet that movie was able to craft a dimensional cross-over extravaganaza with a titular character voiced by Chris Pratt that was altogether a favorite for both fans and critics. Minecraft: Story Mode aims to do the same thing in the video game space, with the player controlling a protagonist named Jesse, voiced by Patton Oswalt, who must save the world from an Ender Dragon.
One of Mass Effect 3's best characters was tragically hidden away in expansion content. Nyreen Kandros was the first female Turian to appear in a Mass Effect game, popping up only in the Omega DLC.
The Metal Gear Solid saga spans a long and storied history, comprised of so many games, some of which that aren't actually numbered. Yes, Konami's franchise has several side stories and spin-off entries that further fleshed out Hideo Kojima's crazy game universe.
Sometimes, a spinoff is so successful that people adopt it so wholeheartedly they forget it was ever a spinoff at all. We talk about that right after we take deep dives into two great spinoffs, Persona 4: Dancing All Night for Vita and Dragon Quest Heroes for PS4.
With the arrival of the Wii U's Super Mario Maker next month many Nintendo fans are excited to create their own 8-bit levels using what has been demonstrated to be a powerful creation platform. While most are expecting it to offer creative side-scrolling platform challenges, there's a lot more that it can do than meets the eye.
Since April there have been many impressive videos made using Grand Theft Auto V's Editor. The latest to hit YouTube is one of the greatest demonstrations of its potential yet.
YouTube user DomesticMango has uploaded a video that replicates the famous The Fast and the Furious drag scene between Brian O'Connor played by Paul Walker and Dominic Toretto played by Vin Diesel. The scene shows both characters racing from a stop light down a stretch of road with a railroad crossing at the quarter mile mark. The video was produced with the actual audio track from the film synced over in-game video cuts that mimic the film, with recreations of the Toyota Supra and Dodge Charger R/T for authenticity.
2K has announced that XCOM 2 will hit PC on February 5th, 2016. This places it just days before Battleborn and Mirror's Edge Catalyst, further strengthening 2016's Q1 line-up.
2015 is a great year for gaming. With RPGs like Bloodborne and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, fun competitive games such as Rocket League and Heroes of the Storm, as well as classically-inspired titles like Pillars of Eternity there's something for everyone. Given there are several high-profile games left to release, 2015's game of the year awards are sure to be dense with competition.
