Popoptiq: A great opening can really set the tone for any piece of art. Whether it be a films first scene or an albums initial track, the opening will be the first thing you engage with in an artists work, and as such, it has the potential to be the most important part of the package. This is certainly true of the opening of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, director/designer/writer/producer Hideo Kojimas final piece of his acclaimed Metal Gear saga.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami, this game continues on from where Ground Zeroes left off with Naked Snakes Oil Rig base getting attacked by Cipher. Shifting an almost always linear game, with the ability to backtrack, to an open-world sandbox experience was a big change that some people couldnt come to terms with whereas others loved the new take on the series.
When Destinys The Taken King expansion released on September 15th for PS4, and Xbox One, many looked at it as a crossroads for this nascent and embattled franchise. Some see it as a chance to tweak and fine tune what they already think is a righteous game; others might be inclined to look at The Taken King as one last chance to redeem a game they feel has been nothing but empty promises. Ask a dozen players what they think of Destiny, and youll get answers ranging from groundbreaking to forgettable. As with many questions like this, the truth is usually somewhere in the middle.
Nerd Reactor: It seems like Bungie listened to what players wanted and kept that in mind. One cannot help but think what may have come of the game if it launched with what we have today, but I am curious to see how the game evolves over the next year.
EA writes:
The new season of EA SPORTS FIFA is here! FIFA 16 launches in North America on September 22 and we cannot wait for fans to get their hands on the beautiful game.
Regardless if you're a seasoned FIFA player or have been curious about joining the fold, here are six reasons to play FIFA 16.
*FIFA 16 is available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, but it is also available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Please note that not all features mentioned are available on all platforms.
EA:
Never underestimate a playmaker. They might not be putting the ball in the back of the net, but the best ones are able to find the open teammate and change the complexion of a match.
MMGN writes: This soft reboot subtly makes the Destiny experience more rewarding and compelling, helping reignite the vision both Bungie and Activision had for the game only a year ago.
MMGN writes: Destiny is now a lot closer to the game Bungie and Activision were promising it could be. Last year we said the game had a lot of growing up to do, but the third and most recent expansion, The Taken King, is undoubtedly the best Destiny experience yet. Combining the best features of the vanilla Destiny experience with a hoard of new additions, The Taken King is the perfect time to get back in and embrace your inner Guardian.
Popoptiq: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain opens with an incredible hour long escape from an under attack hospital that is one of the most exciting opening hours of any video game Ive played. The game ends with a similar mission that is at once confusing, repetitive, boring and anticlimactic. Nothing sums up the final Metal Gear Solid game quite as succinctly as the bookending missions do. Its beautiful, crass, innovative, rote, clever, stupid, polished, and unfinished. This game, more than anything else so far, is the most compelling piece of evidence as to why Hideo Kojima and Konami had their public falling out throughout 2015. The game is a wonderful, ungodly mess; an $80 million game that probably needed a few million more throwing at it to get it ready for release, which presumably, Konami were unwilling to do. Its a disappointing ending for the long running series, that is also one of the best games of the year. Confused? Well, its Metal Gear, after all.
With the release of The Taken King, Destiny feels bigger and better than ever. As does this gallery of the games concept art, expanded and updated to reflect more of the work of some of the worlds best artists.
You might recall the first epic GTA V semi-truck stunt created with this producer. Well he's done again.
"Man enters truck. Man equips C4. Man Drives truck. Man begins seeping pure testosterone through all cavities. Man throws C4. Man detaches trailer from truck. C4 explodes. Trailer flies into air. Trailer goes above overpass. Trailer lands on truck. Trailer re-attaches. Sunglasses materialize on mans face."
Its been seven long years since Metal Gear Solid 4, five since Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker a game while magnificent, that is often forgotten about for its lack of a number causing fans of the franchise to yearn for the next entry in Hideo Kojimas espionage series of magical realism. Through all the trouble and drama between Kojima-san and his employer (developer Konami), the game finally released earlier this month and was met with critical applause, overwhelmingly so. The only detractors it seems come for its story and its sporadic nature, chopped up episodically and inserted between dense gameplay. In the eyes of a quite vocal set of fans, this inaccessibility is a big problem, but is it really? Did Kojima and Konami drop the ball on the main element that the series is known for in favour of implementing one for which it is not?
Welcome to all new Sklylanders: SuperChragers. Even all the portals have disabled by Portal Master Kaos but this is not going to work against the new Skylanders: SuperChargers. Many things have changed since the last Skylanders adventure.
Popoptiq: Just in case the title of the article didnt fully prepare you for whats going on here, allow me to spell it out; in this story there will be spoilers, lots of spoilers, perhaps even all of the spoilers for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. If youre enjoying the game and you dont want to know how it ends, why Quiet has to wear a bikini, or whether or not Drebin and his pet monkey time travel back to 1984 to explain some back story on the bosses for you, you should take this opportunity to abandon ship. Get out of here, and come back when youre done. Go on. Out with you. If youve finished the game, then feel free to stay, because in this article, well be talking about what went wrong with the story in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and there might even be a little baseless speculation as to why it went wrong, too.
